Our Maintenance Workers are the on the ground eyes and ears of this Department, depended on by the entirety of the team for responsive hands-on and equipment-based work. Pierce Transit employs people across three shifts covering our 24-hour operations. The successful candidate will need to be willing and available to work any shift as assigned.
The Maintenance Worker is relied on to perform a variety of tasks in and around Pierce Transit's facilities including but not limited to:
- Perform preventive maintenance to ensure that machines run smoothly, and the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate.
- Assists in fleet fueling.
- Assists with on-the-road bus swaps.
- Enters work order data on Agency personal computers
- Assists all other classifications as needed.

The following functions are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
- Performs general cleaning of work areas (in the Maintenance Shop).
- Enters work order data on Agency personal computers.
- Operates steam cleaner/pressure washer to clean structures, pavement, engines, transmissions, wheels, and other vehicle parts.
- Operates walk-behind floor scrubbers.
- Assists in the coordination and movement of Agency vehicles and assets scheduled for auction.
- Performs sand blasting and cleans parts and components using a cleaning tank and high temperature parts cleaning oven.
- Installs advertising signs, first-aid kits, license plates, fire extinguishers, and other small equipment inside buses.
- Cleans sludge from catch basins and trash from bus vacuums; cleans and refills washing tanks.
- Recycles cleaning solvent and replaces solvent in cleaning tanks.
- Assists Safety Officer by preparing hazardous materials for shipping and disposal.
- Removes snow and spreads sand in parking lots on base and within the Pierce Transit service area.
- Installs snow chains on Agency vehicles.
- Makes vehicle changes when in-service vehicles break down.
- May be required to paint some surfaces.
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Required:
- One year of experience in performing the duties of laborer or custodian or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- License Requirements:
- Must possess a valid Washington State driver license at time of application, with maintenance thereafter.
- Must obtain a Class B Commercial License Permit (CLP) prior to hire and successfully obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with air brake and passenger endorsement within ninety (90) days of hire, with maintenance thereafter.
- Must maintain acceptable driving record throughout employment.
Ability to:
- Perform computerized work order methods and procedures
- Pass a job related examination
- Pass federally mandated drug and alcohol testing
- Drive all job related vehicles and maintain a valid WA State Driver's License and CDL as required.
Special Requirements:
- Must be able to pass Pierce Transit specific forklift training and safely operate forklifts.
- Applicant must be able to perform the essential functions of the job including the ability to maneuver objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Must be willing and able to work any day and any shift as assigned. Shifts are assigned by seniority.
- Hours worked during shifts scheduled to begin between 2:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. receive a shift differential of $0.75 per hour.
- Hours worked between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. receive a shift differential of $2.50 per hour.
This classification is covered by the Drug & Alcohol Abuse Policy and is subject to random testing.
