What are the responsibilities and job description for the Registered Respiratory Therapist / RPSGT position at Pioneers Medical Center?
This position requires the applicant to have BOTH qualifications as a Registered Respiratory Therapist and a Registered Polysomnographic Technician. Both job descriptions are listed below. While this will be a combined hybrid position, the applicant should note the duties for each individual position.
Sleep Center Technologist
Reports to: Sleep Center Director
FLSA Classification: Full-time, Non-Exempt, Hourly
Pioneers Medical Center will lead the effort to improve the health and wellbeing of our
community.
Essential Functions
- Provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center
sleep apnea testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient
care, and direct patient education.
- Collect, analyze and accommodate patient information in order to identify and meet
specific patient needs such as: physical/mental limitations, current
emotional/physiological status regarding testing procedure, as well as medical/social
history.
- Must be competent and confident in their ability to follow established protocols for
PSG, Split-night, PAP Titration (CPAP, Bi-Level, Auto-Servo Ventilation), End Tidal CO2
monitoring and O2 qualification/titration
- Knowledgeable in appropriate use of equipment/supplies and calibration to determine
proper function of equipment and performance of systems, must also be able to adjust
accordingly
- Tech must stay up to date with American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM)
guidelines.
- Follows established protocols to ensure collection of appropriate data
- Identifies, corrects and documents artifact and equipment failures.
- Implement appropriate interventions, including actions necessary for patient safety and
therapeutic intervention such as positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.
- Must be able to score “on the fly” and by correct standards of the American Academy of
Sleep Medicine (AASM).
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific
care in the treatment, assessment, and education of adult and geriatric patients.
- Demonstrate adherence to cleaning and disinfection procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Registered Respiratory Therapist - Cardiopulmonary
Reports to: Cardiopulmonary Director
FLSA Classification: Full-time, Non-exempt, Hourly
Pioneers Medical Center will lead the effort to improve the health and wellbeing of our
community.
The working environment is a normal clinical setting with exposure to sharps and biological and
chemical agents. It is expected that facility safety practices and protocols are followed at all
times.
Essential Functions
- Competent delivery of all Respiratory Care procedures as outlined in the department
policy and procedure manual.
- Give and receive accurate and complete report. Update and complete patient profile to
reflect patient’s current clinical status.
- Work in all areas of the hospital.
- Assist in orientation/training of new employees, respiratory/nursing students, and
precept new employees during orientation
- Maintain accurate and complete documentation of all respiratory care procedures per
department policy
- Verify respiratory care physicians’ orders. Initial, date, and time order after verification
- Receive and give accurate report. Update and complete patient profile to reflect patients
current clinical status. Be prepared and ready to receive/give report at the specified
times.
- Attend and participate in departments in-services, meetings, patient care rounds, and
mandatory hospital meetings.
- Keep supervisor apprised of changes in workload and patient activity
- Understand and institute advanced ventilator modalities such as IRV and PC-SIMV.
- Provide timely and accurate update information to the physicians and other hospital
personnel. Make recommendations for changes or modification of patient therapy by
contacting physicians.
- Enter into the department's computer all daily services and charges given to patients.
- Other duties as assigned.
Patient Care Within Scope Includes, But Is Not Limited To:
- Perform arterial blood gas sampling.
- Perform effective airway management to include bag/mask ventilation. Assist
physician/intubation certified therapist with intubation.
- Initiate and perform CPR, primarily responsible for airway management.
- Initiate, maintain and monitor ventilated patients using Bicore and Siements graphics.
- Interpret flow volumes and pressure volume curves to initiate appropriate clinical
changes.
- Evaluate chest x-ray for endotracheal placement and other clinical conditions optimizing
Respiratory Care delivery.
- Initiate, maintain, monitor and document continuous mechanical ventilation.
- Understand and institute advanced ventilator modalities, such as IRV and PC-SIMV.
Education and Experience
- Graduation from a two-year AMA-approved School for Respiratory Care
- Passing score on the NBRC examination
- Active, unencumbered Colorado State License for performing respiratory care
- Current BLS, PALS and ACLS certification, classes offered at PMC for new and
recertification. Instructor licenses are acceptable in their place.
- At least six months of previous working experience in a hospital setting is strongly
desired.
- Complete required continuous training and education, including department-specific
requirements.
