Youth Services Librarian PT/FT
The Powhatan County Public Library seeks advocates for youth literacy to provide programming and services to our enthusiastic youth and their caregivers as a Youth Services Librarian. Powhatan County is a rural locality neighboring Richmond City and Chesterfield County with a growing population; we have active, growing library usage. Our current services include outreach and programs for pre-k through young adult, including story times, seasonal programs, STEAM activities, clubs, and volunteer opportunities. Duties also include developing our youth material collection and serving as a resource for caregivers of our young patrons. The Library team includes a collaborative, supportive staff, Library Board of Trustees, and Friends of the Library group. We are primarily seeking a full-time librarian; we may also fill a part-time position to be assigned some of the role’s duties. If you relate to teens and tweens, like wearing costumes, sing songs about the alphabet, dance like a frog, can conjure a craft or a story out of a box of odds and ends, or any combination of the above, PCPL needs you on the team.
Duties
The Youth Service Librarian role is responsible for the provision of library services for children and their caregivers to include circulation, reference, reader’s advisory and overall customer service. This position plans, publicizes, prepares and performs:
- Weekly story times for preschool children
- Programs for youth from birth to tween, including summer reading
- STEAM programming
- Outreach at schools and special events
- Programs in partnership with our public schools, the local extension office, Powhatan State Park, and others
- Displays to educate or promote library resources
- Thematic displays for our Story Teller Trail program
- Statistical tracking of program attendance
The Youth Service Librarian tracks the budget for their programming, and annually provides our Friends of the Library estimates for funding their programs. Collection Development responsibilities include selecting materials for youth, weeding, and collection maintenance. This position as part of the library team may assist patrons with circulation, reader’s advisory, use of public computers, online assistance, downloading materials and general computer and technology questions as needed.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of library science.
- Ability to become familiar with automated library systems.
- Knowledge of youth literature.
- Ability to plan, promote, and carry out library youth programming.
- Ability to select materials appropriate to particular library collections.
- Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
- Knowledge of current literacy tools for encouraging and supporting young readers.
- Ability to perform the necessary duties that can involve lifting, walking, standing or driving with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Education and Experience
Master of Library Science (MLIS) degree from an ALA accredited library school. Demonstrated experience and education in youth programming and literacy education will be considered in lieu of the MLIS. Successful candidates are required to pass a background check and drug test prior to the start of employment.
