The Prince William County Sheriff’s Office is a state accredited agency that takes great pride in serving our community with integrity, respect, and professionalism. The sheriff’s office provides security for the Judicial Center complex, serves civil process, provides timely transport of prisoners and patients to court ordered proceedings, and participates in numerous community programs (i.e. Project Lifesaver, Senior Safe, Gun Safety, etc.). Through collaboration and partnerships with elected leaders, staff, and citizens, the sheriff’s office continues to develop and enhance our services available to the community. The sheriff’s office holds concurrent law enforcement jurisdiction with local police departments and stands ready to assist them in primary duties as needed.

Hiring SalaryThe starting salary is $60,789 per year. Virginia Law Enforcement officers/deputies are eligible to receive a higher salary based on years of service. Certified out-of-state applicants are eligible for a shortened transitional academy. If you do not hold a current Virginia law enforcement certification, you will be paid while attending the academy! The sheriff’s office will supply your uniforms and all equipment. We offer hiring and pay incentives, language stipends, permanent shifts, excellent benefits including, but not limited to, health, vision, dental, life insurance, VRS retirement and many more.


Signing Bonus: We offer a generous $10,000 one-time signing bonus for eligible new employees, paid in two installments. 


Education BonusEligible applicants may receive a one-time education bonus, as a percentage of the entry-level salary, payable after successful completion of the probationary period as calculated below:

 

  • 1.5% - Associate degree
  • 3.0% - Bachelor’s degree
  • 4.5% - Master’s Degree
  • 6.0% - Doctorate Degree

Military Experience BonusEligible applicants may receive a one-time military experience bonus, as a percentage of the entry-level salary, payable after successful completion of the probationary period as calculated below:


  • 1.5% - Enlisted Ranks (E-4 through E-9)
  • 3.0% - Officer and Warrant Officer Ranks (W-1 through W-4; O-1 and higher)

If Not LEO Certified: If you meet the qualifications to receive a one-time hiring bonus of $10,000, this bonus will be paid in two installments and is subject to all applicable tax withholding and reporting requirements. The first installment ($5,000) is payable in the paycheck for the pay period that includes your public safety academy graduation date. The second installment ($5,000) will be payable in the paycheck for the pay period that includes the one-year anniversary date of academy graduation and your end of probation. The eligibility to receive hiring incentive payments will terminate if you vacate a position that was eligible for the hiring incentive program. If you are a probationary employee and voluntarily terminate employment with the County, you will be required to repay the net amount of the first incentive payment. The County will deduct the dollar amount equivalent of the incentive payment from your annual leave payout. If your annual leave payout does not cover the full amount due, you are required to pay the remaining amount to the County within 30 days of your separation date.


If LEO Certified (Current PWC Employee): If you meet the qualifications to receive a one-time hiring bonus of $10,000, this bonus will be paid in two installments and is subject to all applicable tax withholding and reporting requirements. The first installment ($5,000) is payable in the first regular paycheck covering the pay period in your new position. The second installment ($5,000) will be payable on the pay date following the completion of 12 months in your new position. Your eligibility to receive hiring incentive payments will terminate if you vacate a position that was eligible for the hiring incentive program. If you are a probationary employee and voluntarily terminate employment with the County, you will be required to repay the net amount of the first incentive payment. The County will deduct the dollar amount equivalent of the incentive payment from your annual leave payout. If your annual leave payout does not cover the full amount due, you are required to pay the remaining amount to the County within 30 days of your separation date. 
 

If LEO Certified (Not a Current PWC Employee): If you meet the qualifications to receive a one-time hiring bonus of $10,000, this bonus will be paid in two installments and is subject to all applicable tax withholding and reporting requirements. The first installment ($5,000) is payable in the pay date following the completion of your first 90 days in your new position. The second installment ($5,000) will be payable on the pay date following the completion of 12 months in your new position. Your eligibility to receive hiring incentive payments will terminate if you vacate a position that was eligible for the hiring incentive program. If you are a probationary employee and voluntarily terminate employment with the County, you will be required to repay the net amount of the first incentive payment. The County will deduct the dollar amount equivalent of the incentive payment from your annual leave payout. If your annual leave payout does not cover the full amount due, you are required to pay the remaining amount to the County within 30 days of your separation date. 

If you previously received the first installment of a hiring incentive, you are only eligible to receive the second installment of the hiring incentive based on the new position you are going into. This payment ($5,000) will be payable on the pay date following the completion of 12 months in your new position. Your eligibility to receive hiring incentive payments will terminate if you vacate a position that was eligible for the hiring incentive program. If you are a probationary employee and voluntarily terminate employment with the County, you will be required to repay the net amount of the first incentive payment. The County will deduct the dollar amount equivalent of the incentive payment from your annual leave payout. If your annual leave payout does not cover the full amount due, you are required to pay the remaining amount to the County within 30 days of your separation date.


Language Stipend: Approximately $1,770.08/per year stipend, paid bi-weekly contingent upon passing the language skills test.

  • Screening and Assessment: personal history statement, applicant interview and conditional offer of employment
  • Polygraph and Psychological Evaluation
  • Thorough medical exam and physical abilities assessment
  • Sheriff’s interview and formal job offer 

Selection Criteria


  • Must be at least 21 years of age by academy graduation date.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen at time of application.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license at the time of application.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED by date of hire.
  • Must pass a medical exam and physical abilities assessment. 
  • Must pass a hearing exam.
  • Must not be colorblind. 
  • Must not have any felony convictions.

The selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment background check and is subject to the following: criminal and credit history check, education and driver’s license verification check, fingerprinting, a physical and polygraph examination.
