Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities:
Responsible for setting up and operating a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mechanics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
Essential Function/Responsibilities:
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of instruments such as micrometers, gauges, and calipers.
- Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations (i.e. offsets, tool lengths, programs).
- Ability to listen to machines during operation in order to detect sounds such as those made by dull cutting tools or excessive vibration and be able to adjust machines to compensate for issues.
- Modify cutting programs to account for problems encountered during operation and save modified programs.
- Calculate machine speed and feed ratios and the size and position of cuts.
- Review program specifications and/or blueprints to determine and set up machine operations and sequencing.
- Set up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting three and four-jaw chucks, tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers; indicating vices, tramming heads.
- Perform periodic preventative maintenance on equipment being used, including daily cleaning and daily maintenance checklists.
- Must be able to use holding fixtures, soft jaws, parallels, and other set-up fixtures and holding devices.
- Maintains specifications while machining; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Training, Skills, Knowledge, and/or Experience:
- 5 years minimum experience operating a CNC milling machine using G and M code functions.
- Must possess basic computer skills, basic math, and geometry.
- Must have the ability to read and understand EIA code formats as well as conversational formats over several different controls and machine types.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
