PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Director of Facilities Operations and Sustainability, the Maintenance Manager will be responsible for developing maintenance procedures and ensuring implementation. The Maintenance Manager will lead team of Utility Maintenance Mechanics to carry out inspections of facilities to identify and resolve issues as well as checking electrical, plumbing, and hydraulic systems of buildings to ensure functionality. This position is expected to begin July 2022.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plans and schedules facility modifications, including cost estimates and execution of small projects and equipment replacements.
  • Maintains maintenance staff schedule.
  • Manages work order system and assigning of duties to the maintenance team.
  • Initiates planned/preventative maintenance programs for a variety of facility equipment including HVAC, facility equipment, etc. Coordinates these activities with Facilities leadership team including the Facilities Director and Associate Director of planning and programmed maintenance.
  • Manages the maintenance of buildings and equipment.
  • Ensures the working operation of the mechanical, electrical and exercise equipment.
  • Manages inventory of tools and supplies; places orders when needed.
  • Manages requests for proposals, requests for information, communication, scheduling, invoice tracking, quality assurance, and follow up with outside service vendors.
  • Ensures high level of customer service.
  • Maintains compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Monitors expenses within budget for the maintenance unit.
  • Acts as administrator-in-charge of Facilities Operations role while the Director is out of the office.
  • Participates in design review of planning and construction as well as commissioning in order to facilitate safe operations and preparations for onboarding of new College facilities.
  • Oversees and maintains regulatory and agency related permits, inspections and corrective action follow-up for the state of California, county of Los Angeles, and city of Claremont, and local fire as it relates to operations.
  • Active support for the College’s Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
Individuals must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Knowledge of facility mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems and their major components.
  • Ability to organize individual items into logical groups.
  • Knowledge of facilities equipment maintenance needs.
  • Ability to read, interpret and work from plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to understand root causes of equipment failure and how maintenance techniques can minimize failures.
  • Ability to work in active database and enter accurate information in records.
  • Knowledge of database structures and relationships.
  • Ability to communicate with utility maintenance mechanics about systems and equipment.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage staff and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse constituencies and accomplish written and oral directions is necessary.
  • Must be able to plan, coordinate, and assign work schedules.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have the capability to plan, coordinate, analyze, execute, and document specific administrative and management functions with long term goals in mind.
  • Computer literacy and a working knowledge of floor plans.
  • Must have, a customer service approach, and be willing to work within a team environment.
  • Possesses awareness and knowledge of emergency procedures and participates in related response and training.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability to perform the job.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:
This is a regular, full-time, benefits-eligible, exempt position.

The regular hours of this position are Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm. Hours may vary due to the needs of the College or department.

May work some weekends and special events as required by the College.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Will supervise a Maintenance Lead and a team of Utility Maintenance Mechanics.

Ability to maintain good concentration level while dealing with interruptions; attention to details with emphasis on accuracy; capable of giving, receiving, and analyzing information, formulating work plans, and articulating goals and action plans.

Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than the whole hand(s), or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal parameters. Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to file. Ability to move about. Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs., for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages.

At-Will Employment
Regular employment at the College is for no specified period of time; conditions and status of employment (hours, pay, title, duties, etc.) are subject to change at any time. Scripps College is an At-Will employer. Employees, and likewise the College, are free to end the employment relationship at any time, for any reason, with or without notice or cause, unless otherwise prohibited by law.

With the goal of providing the safest campus possible for our community, the College is requiring faculty and staff to have their COVID-19 vaccines up to date within two weeks of hire date or within two weeks of when employee becomes eligible to receive a booster, whichever is later. The College considers a vaccine to be up to date if (i) the individual has previously received two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine and receives either a third dose of one of those vaccines or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or (ii) the individual has previously received one dose the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and receives either a second dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or one dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. Exemptions for documented medical reasons or a sincerely held religious belief may be requested.
