Systems Development Engineer & Naval Architect

Seakeeper Inc
Fort Myers, FL Full Time
POSTED ON 12/1/2022 CLOSED ON 5/30/2023

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Systems Development Engineer & Naval Architect position at Seakeeper Inc?

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Our Systems Development Engineer & Naval Architects have an insatiable desire to make things better, constantly unsatisfied with the status quo. They love to tinker and are undeterred by the idea of breaking something if it means possibly improving it, especially if they can break it out on the water! In this role, you’ll be the glue that connects the design and production phases of our engineering process for Seakeeper Ride.  As of July 2023, you'll contribute to developing unorthodox products by:

  • Creating, managing, and executing boat test plans in support of the following objectives:
    • Performance analyses for new-to-the-world stabilization systems and control algorithms
    • Studies that seek to better understand the physics of small planning boats and small planning boat stabilization systems
    • Spending significant time on the water testing and evaluating new stabilization systems and control algorithms
    • Providing design input, helping troubleshoot and diagnose product design issues prior to product launch
    • Innovating on test procedures and helping automate long-term testing to accelerate project timelines
    • Building systems expertise on Seakeeper’s current and future products
  • Collaborating with a growing, multi-disciplined, engineering team to continue innovating Seakeeper’s core technologies
  • Effectively communicating test data in a clear and intuitive way
  • Documenting and cataloging collected data for future use

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

Do you have a positive attitude, an eagerness to learn, and the ability to hustle in a fast-paced environment? Then Seakeeper is the place for you! Here are a few other things you’ll need to succeed.

MUST-HAVES

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with an electrical, mechanical, or computer science discipline or a Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering
  • Relevant experience, which can come in the form of previous work experience or strong and demonstrated collegiate design experience (e.g. senior design project, intercollegiate club work, or personal hobbies) in areas similar to the following:
    • Telemetry projects
    • Arduino or low-cost Linux boards
    • Prototype printed circuit boards
    • Strain gauge application and data analysis
  • Be comfortable wiring and being hands-on with the product (it’s going to be dirty sometimes!)
  • Data analysis skills and interest in growing your experience with programs such as Python, MATLAB, and/or LabVIEW
  • Have a mechanical aptitude and be handy
  • Capable of thinking systematically and documenting processes, procedures, and test results
  • Thrive in a collaborative team environment, but also effective working independently
  • Eager to learn and gain experience in a wide array of disciplines and projects
  • Motivated to improve both yourself and those around you
  • Passion to bring new products into production
  • A passion for being on the water

NICE-TO-HAVES

  • Experience operating a small boat

MORE DETAILS YOU’LL WANT TO KNOW

  • This role will not start until July 2023
    • We are actively interviewing and hiring for the role In between now and then
  • Upon starting, you’ll be located onsite in our Greater Cape Coral/Ft. Myers, FL facility full-time (a minimum 16 days per month)

YOUR TEAM

Our Systems Development Engineers & Naval Architects are nestled within our Seakeeper Ride Product Engineering department. It is a small, but mighty team that covers a lot of ground. It is a flat team, managing projects through an Agile workflow that allows maximum exposure to a variety of projects and systems within the group. The team is comprised of engineers with varying backgrounds and specialties including hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, software, controls, and more with a heavy emphasis on collaboration. You’ll be able to be involved in a myriad of projects and participate in program management instead of only owning a small defined piece of the process.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT HERE

It’s true that we make extraordinary products, but our favorite part about Seakeeper is our people! We believe in participative leadership. That means you have the freedom to make a difference and contribute to the larger goal, regardless of your position. Great ideas can strike at any moment, and when you have one, you’re empowered to speak up!

We are constantly pushing (or crushing) boundaries. Stagnant or bored are about as opposite from Seakeeper as you can get! We move quick and if there is something that can be improved upon, we jump on it.

WHO WE ARE

71% of our Earth is covered by water and we want everyone to make the most of it. That’s why we are committed to creating products that transform the boating experience with an organization that employees want to work for, customers want to buy from, and vendors want to partner with. Seakeeper Ride, a Vessel Attitude Control System, eliminates underway pitch and roll, making time on the water safer and more comfortable for everyone on board.

Seakeeper was founded in 2008, growing from a start-up operation to the worldwide leader in stabilization thanks to its popular line of gyrostabilizers. Seakeeper Ride launched in 2022 and is the first product deviation from that line, bringing the magic of Seakeeper to boats while underway. There’s a long runway of growth ahead as more and more OEMs adopt Seakeeper Ride as standard equipment and we work to make aftermarket refits a reality.

Ready for a new challenge in a fast-paced environment? Want to help us disrupt an industry...again? Come on and apply, we are ready for you!
