Job Summary
Our Controller is responsible for leading and managing Sequoyah s accounting team which consists of payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger team members. Our Controller partners with others across our company and works closely with each position within our department to improve both the quality of our financial data and the processes we use. The Controller is a leader, coach, and someone hands-on in the completion of work. Our Controller is a versatile team member and will collaborate with others to solve challenges and develop the skills of those around them so that our team delivers great work and is well-prepared for growth.
The Controller performs the following:
- Lead and manage accounting staff
- Partners with others across our company to ensure a smooth flow of information to and from the Accounting Department
- Establishes and implements internal controls for accurate and proper accounting procedures
- Assist CFO with monthly WIP s and financial preparation.
- Supports GL Accountant coordinating with external auditors
- Handles annual insurance renewal and audit
- Maintain and update labor rates for bids and proposals
- Reviews and processes corporate leases
- Manages all business licenses
- Back up to:
- Payroll functions including union reporting
- Cash Management; deposits and bank reconciliations
- Collections
- Tax and licensing
- Month end closing and accruals
- Fixed asset management
- Provide annual performance evaluations and compensation reviews for accounting team
- Maintain positive relations with office and field team members
- Maintain department confidentiality
- Perform additional tasks as assigned
Qualification Requirements
- Bachelor s degree in Accounting or Finance
- 4 years of general ledger experience within the construction industry required
- Knowledge of payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable functions
- Payroll and business tax knowledge of federal, Washington State and local taxes and requirements
- Knowledge of business licensing procedures and requirements
- Prior experience working with construction work in progress (WIP s), a plus
- Financial Statement and analysis experience preferred
- Adaptability to learn our business, understand processes and recognize the needs of others when making decisions and implementing improvements
- Experience leading and managing a team
- Understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Procedures (GAAP)
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
