Job Description
Grocery Assistant Manager
Purpose: To ensure prompt, friendly, customer service and maintain a clean, fully-stocked, safe and attractive grocery department. To assist in the hiring, reviewing, scheduling and training of Grocery Employees. To coordinate floor operations including ordering, receiving, facing, cleaning, and stocking. To assist in cultivating an environment of motivation, teamwork, and accountability.
Status: Full-time. Reports to Grocery Manager. Supervises Shift Leads, Receivers & Stockers.
Pay Level: VI
Responsibilities:
Customer Service
- Model and train staff to provide exceptional customer service.
- Work effectively with customers from various cultural backgrounds
- Provide staff and customers with accurate product information including source,
- uses, nutrition, and preparation.
- Report customer suggestions and comments to appropriate management.
- Ensure special orders are fulfilled in a timely and accurate manner.
- Collaborate with Demo staff to provide samples to customers
Department Maintenance
- Products
o Ensure grocery departments are fully stocked, faced, and rotated, following established merchandising procedures.
o See that unsellable items are returned for credit or disposed of.
o Participate in quarterly inventory counts.
o Ensure that new items are slotted to the shelf following established guidelines and planograms.
- Merchandising
o Follow merchandising guidelines to create an excellent shopping experience in the department and the store.
o Facilitate Seward Co-op promotions program.
o Assist with resets and promotional displays as needed.
o Communicate supplier issues and shelf/product needs to Grocery Manager.
o Facilitate communication across all business units to ensure the best customer experience.
- Safety
o Ensure that retail and storage areas are maintained in clean, orderly condition, satisfying Health Department rules and store safety regulations.
o Ensure safety of staff and customers, respond to emergencies, and resolve safety hazards.
o Ensure safety and quality of all grocery products by monitoring storage conditions, temperatures and shelf life. Ensure short dated product is discounted.
Ordering And Receiving
- Assist Grocery Manager in the design and implementation of procedures for ordering, receiving, inventory tracking, and back room organization.
- Coordinate accurate and efficient ordering, receiving, and stocking of grocery departments.
- Coordinate receiving for other store departments as needed.
- Oversee receiving to ensure timely stocking of orders and delivery of product to other departments.
- Place orders for Replenishment Buyers as needed.
Personnel
- Maintain department schedule in alignment with labor budget.
- Facilitate training of new hires and provide ongoing training and coaching for Shift Leads, Stockers, Replenishment Buyers, and Receivers.
- Work effectively with co-workers from various cultural backgrounds
- Document performance issues and ensure adherence to store policies, safety, guidelines and Health Department regulations.
- Provide input for performance evaluations to Grocery Manager.
Other duties as assigned
- Keep all supplies stocked and equipment in working order; communicate maintenance needs to the Grocery Manager.
- Maintain a department-wide cleaning schedule.
- Support smooth operational transition to new organizational chart.
- Perform other tasks assigned by Grocery Manager or Merchandising Manager.
- Attend department and all-staff meetings.
- Serve as Floor Warden in case of any emergency.
Qualifications:
Essential
- Supervisory experience.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Experience with retail purchasing and inventory control.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and delegate.
- Ability to handle multiple demands.
- Reliable attendance.
- Competency with Windows-based PC systems including Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Willingness and ability to meet the changing requirements of the job.
- Command of the English language
Functional
- Ability to bend and stoop to grasp objects and climb ladders.
- Ability to stand, bend, stoop, reach, squat and walk for extended periods of time per shift
- Ability to bend and lift loads, not to exceed 50 pounds. Push and pull carts weighing up to 200 pounds.
- Handle environmental exposure to extreme temperatures (coolers and freezers).
- Ability to freely access all areas of the store including offices, sales floor, back stock areas, and walk-in coolers and freezers.
Preferred
- Experience serving the needs of a multi-cultural community
- A minimum of two year experience with retail natural foods.
- Multiple language competencies.
- Demonstrated ability to work with customers and co-workers from various cultural backgrounds
