Description

Reporting to the Head of Scholarly and Institutional Resources, the Archives an Technical Services librarian will assist with planning, establishing, organizing, developing and managing the medical School’s (SIUSM) Archives and special collections program. This position will be responsible for preserving the institution’s historical legacy while supporting research, teaching and scholarly activities. The successful candidate will work with rare medical texts, institutional records, faculty publications, oral histories, class pictures, newsletters, curriculum and many other documents and artifacts from SIUSM. The candidate will perform print material cataloging. The candidate may also provide specialized reference/instructional services to students, faculty, colleagues, researchers and the broader medical community to improve the accessibility of Archives and Special Collections.

Examples of Duties

I.Administration 30%

  • Technical Services
  • Assists the Head of SIR to develop collection policies and procedures for archives.
  • Partners with the Pearson Museum Curator to identify Pearson Museum gifts within Special Collections. Assists Curator with displays, outreach, and organization of Museum Archives. Assists Curator with Oral History project.
  • Develops storage location schema and documentation of archival boxes, enabling rapid identification of box contents and where box is located.
  • Assists the Head of SIR to develop collection policies and procedures for the acquisition, use and storage of rare and historical medical texts.

II.Professional Service 50%

  • Archives
  • Acts as primary contact for Archives and Special Collections
  • Establishes relationships with faculty, alumni and other associated with SIUSM to raise awareness of Archives to increase potential donations.
  • Identifies, acquires and appraises materials and artifacts related to SIUSM history and institutional records. Prioritizes fragile, high use and critically important publications and milestones in SIUSM history.
  • Coordinates Library efforts to ensure that collections are discoverable and accessible
  • Oversees physical preservation activities including proper storage, handling, conservation

and discovery of archival materials.

  • Plans for future digital initiatives, implementing technology to insure long-term digitization preservation
  • Represents SIU-SOM as a member of the Society of American Archivists (SAA) to utilize professional resources and abide by SAA Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct for Archivists.
  • Special Collections
  • Assists the Head of SIR to develop an inventory process for Special Collections, including identifying and/or de-duplicating special collection items in library storage.
  • Updates rare book values in a timely manner for library insurance purposes.
  • Print Collections:
  • Facilitates de-accessing of obsolete medical texts in library book shelves, taking note of SIU authored materials for archives.
  • Assist Head of SIR with facilitation of WEST print preservation initiative.
  • Determines journal titles to be bound and works with HF Group to coordinate bindery processing.
  • Serves as principal cataloger for all library print materials.

III. Teaching and Outreach 15%

  • Participates in library outreach and promotion activities.
  • Provides specialized reference services for Archives and Special Collections, including requests from faculty, alumni, students and administration. Examples include locating, scanning or lending items to Alumni for reunions or SIUSM events.
  • Seeks and identifies alternate funding pathways to sustain our mission

IV. Research 5%

  • Pursues research interests in areas of information science, archives, rare books and medical informatics.
  • Engages in professional development via archives/preservation workshops, webinars, and consortia listservs related to job functions.
  • Stays current with emerging technologies and trends in library automation and digital resources.
  • Familiarity with copyright and its application to material in all formats

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

This section should list the minimum basic training, skills, knowledge, and experience needed to be considered a viable candidate for the position.

  • Completion of a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited school.
  • Experience with cataloging and familiarity with cataloging standards and best practices.
  • Experience working with historic collections, archives and special collection materials.
  • Ability and willingness to work with colleagues in collaborative and team environments, and independently.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication, collaborative and organization skills
  • Understanding of NLM, LCC, MARC, OCLC, DACS and ALMA metadata and standards for archival description.
  • Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ALMA/PRIMO VE
  • Understanding of medical history and healthcare terminology
  • Ability to foster an environment of collegiality, respect and trust
  • Utilization of discovery services such as Archives Space to record and disseminate archival holdings.
