Registered Dietitian

 

General Summary:

 

Responsible for providing comprehensive, high quality nutritional counseling to patients in the surgical and non-surgical weight management programs to help patients achieve their health and weight management goals. Additional areas of responsibility include counseling out-patients of other disease states besides the disease obesity, coverage of inpatients on an as needed basis and community outreach.

 

Essential Job Functions:

 

  • Providing comprehensive nutrition assessment, evidence-based medical nutrition therapy, and counseling clients on a highly effective treatment plan pre and post-bariatric surgery and for patients in the non-surgical weight management program. Appointments will be offered both face-to-face and via telehealth.
  • Meets frequently with patients: pre and post-op bariatric surgery with appointments focused on dietary education and behavior modification, as well as laboratory result review of micronutrient deficiencies.
  • Meets frequently with medication assisted weight loss patients to analyze their food intake, provide encouragement, guidance and focus on dietary modifications to meet their weight loss goals.
  • Perform medical nutrition therapy (nutrition assessment, evaluation, and counseling) based on individual client needs and concerns. Promote client empowerment and accountability. Provide meal planning as necessary.
  • Provides education on behavioral modifications, discusses dietary supplementation, and effectively communicates/coordinates with the bariatric surgeons, medical weight management provider, program coordinator and ancillary staff of the surgical and non-surgical weight management programs on patient care.
  • Analyzing patients’ health status, goals and dietary restrictions, tracking clients’ dietary intake and progress and educating patients on how to maintain a balanced diet.
  • Providing motivational interviewing to engage clients in behavior change.
  • Proficiency with intuitive eating principles and applying them in situations when clients demonstrate disordered eating behaviors.
  • Attending monthly meetings to review both the bariatric and medically managed weight loss patients.
  • Participate in and lead bariatric support groups as needed.
  • Attends and participates in bariatric informational sessions.
  • Ongoing modification/updating of out-patient nutrition handouts.
  • Coverage of in-patient nutrition services on an as needed basis. May include participation in multi-disciplinary discharge rounds contributing pertinent information about patients’ diet and nutritional needs.
  • Maintains the professional credentials and/or continuing education hours required for the position and for professional and personal growth.
  • Demonstrates hospital’s stated mission and values of teamwork, respect and communication with co-workers, patients, families and visitors.
  • Meets department customer service standards and strives to enhance the level of customer service provided.  
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  • Education      

                        Required:  Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics

Registered Dietitian status with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

             

  • Work Experience

Required: 1 to 3 years as an out-patient Dietitian

Preferred:  Experience working in a surgical and non-surgical weight management program

  • Licensure/Certifications/Registrations

Required:  Registered Dietitian and Licensed Dietitian in State of NH

  • Other Skills/Knowledge

Required:

  • Knowledge of food science, nutrition, food service, medicine, and human pathology.
  • Ability to integrate food and nutrition with other disciplines in the practice setting.
  • Knowledge and skill in providing systematic nutrition care, including screening, assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation and documentation.
  • Ability to promote effective professional relationships in the practice of nutrition, dietetics, healthcare and community service.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision
