Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 - 4:30
The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions, which house approximately 5,200 inmates, statewide. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). Currently, we are seeking self-motivated, results-driven candidates in the position of Office Technician. The Office Technician incumbents will model the NDCS Values of integrity, respect, compassion, growth, and excellence as we accomplish our mission, "Keep people safe." Type correspondence. Distribute mail. Maintain a filing system. Respond to inquiries. Process incoming inmate legal documents. Review and update weekly reports. Prepare and log discharge files for Central Records. Compile statistics for reports. Interact with the public and law enforcement officials. Limited inmate contact. Work with confidential information. Act as back up for the mail room staff.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: Coursework/training or experience in public contact, customer service, and/or performing and applying office/clerical support procedures, including the use of a personal computer, associated software, and office equipment.
PREFERRED: At least one year of experience performing office/clerical/secretarial support functions. Experience taking meeting minutes and transcribing dictation. Proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
OTHER: Type 40 wpm net. Typing test required prior to interview. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam and, at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities: the practices and procedures pertinent to office/clerical support operations; the methods of filing, record keeping, bookkeeping, and mailing; computer operations and standard software and hardware applications; the purpose and activities of the employing agency; the work unit policies and guidelines pertinent to office/clerical support operations; the functions and specialized terminology associated with the work unit and agency; grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation to recognize and correct errors; the procedures of manual and electronic file maintenance, record keeping, and mail distribution.
