Highway Maintenance Worker II - Heavy Equipment Operator (61034076)

Performs general highway maintenance worker functions and operates heavy equipment such as a backhoe, excavator, front end loader, motor grader and slope mower to perform other related tasks as assigned. Performs skilled manual labor in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Examples include grading, setting forms, pouring/finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks; performing work on driveways, shoulders, ditches, and drainage pipes/structures; installing and repairing traffic signs and pavement markings; performing a variety of vegetation management activities; repairing potholes and base surface failures of roadway. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide and flags traffic during road repairs to warn motorists and control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment. Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way. This position requires employee to lift heavy objects, and assists Supervisor with on-call for after-hours emergencies as needed. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, to include operating medium or heavy duty equipment. May include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.


One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
