What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mental Health Professional I position at State of South Carolina?

This position is located at Department of Mental Health/Columbia Area Mental Health Center, Emergency Services-Mobile Crisis, CAMHC #327.

Under general supervision, provides advance level mental health assessments of clients experiencing crisis. Conducts face to face consultations as needed, arriving on site no later than 60 minutes after the receipt of the call.  Participate in on-call rotation once to twice a week and on call rotation one weekend a month.  Formulate level of care and disposition.  Educate clients, family, friends, and others on dispositions.  Serves as a provider of the crisis, by administering brief and or family therapy to address crisis and identify triggers for crisis behavior to include development of crisis safety plan up to initiating the process of involuntary commitment.

Provide follow-up as needed with patients seen face to face or via telephone contact.  Will follow up with patient up to 14 days minimum and up to 28 days if needed to engage patient into care, to make further disposition, and to identify needs and resources for patient to maintain in the community.  

Participate in weekly Assessment/Community Response staff meetings.  Participate in daily treatment staff meetings reviewing calls throughout the last 24 hours.  Serves as liaison to local CMHC to provide updates on SCDMH clients.

Performs extended assessments and C-20's of walk-ins and telephone contact of individuals who present with complex diagnostic features in order to better identify various diagnostic issues for treatment and referral to appropriate resources.

Provides training and community engagement with law enforcement, probate, DSS, homeless shelters, private practices, medical offices, and other organizations.

State Requirements:  A master's degree in guidance, counseling, the social sciences or a related field.

Experience working with severe and persistent mentally ill adult clients.  Licensure preferred; licensure supervision available.


Agency Prefers:   A master's degree in guidance, counseling or the social sciences and one (1) year or more post graduate counseling experience of which must have been in a clinical setting.  Must be eligible to become a licensed notary in South Carolina.
