The Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) is accepting applications for a Food Service Worker to Assist in preparing and serving food and performs routine clean-up and sanitation duties.

The Opportunity:
If you are enthusiastic about creating and serving quality food, we have an opportunity for you to start your career as a Food Service Worker at the Echo Glen Children’s Center. In this role, you will be part of the culinary team that ensures excellent customer service, safety, and quality in food and nutritional services. You will prepare and serve food with help from youth committed to our facility by the juvenile courts. The skills taught to youth will assist their transition into the community and support rehabilitative programming within the institution.
Some of what you'll do:
- Prepare daily snacks, condiments, milk, juice, fruit and cold cereal.
- Load meals into food carts, unload returned pans and sanitize the food carts.
- Set up, dissemble, and clean the serving line.
- Clean and wash dining room tables, wash dishes, trays and utensils. Sweep, mop, vacuum and clean the kitchen, dining area, walk-in refrigerators and restrooms.
- Operate equipment such as, dishwashers, refrigerators and beverage equipment.
- Track and log temperatures.
- Perform light laundry (aprons, towels and mop heads).
- Supervise, monitor, and instruct youth in food preparation, sanitation, and safety procedures.
- Assign youth duties, schedule and record working times, inspect work performed by youth, and evaluate their process.
- Model pro-social adaptive behavior, recognize and assess problem situations and intervene to maintain safety and security.
- Report breaches of security immediately.
- Perform key and tool control as required by policy.
- Maintain supplies in dining and serving areas during and after meals.
What we're looking for:
- Knowledge of kitchen and dining room work; personal hygiene, sanitation, and housekeeping practices; operation of standard kitchen appliances and equipment.
- A current Health Card.
- Expertise in providing services to urban youth and have an understanding of juvenile offender behavior.
- Effectively communicate with management, peers, clients, and the public as required to carry out the assigned duties of the position.
In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also:
- Possess the ability to learn routines involved in preparing and serving food; follow written and oral instructions; instruct residents (as assigned).
