Summary:

Under the direction of the Roads & drainage Manager, this position operates and maintains district equipment and property. The position will operate heavy machinery for construction, demolition, or excavation projects and perform facility maintenance, operate public works automotive/construction equipment, and perform necessary maintenance of district equipment and facilities.

Essential Job Functions (Illustrative Only):

Operates and maintains public works equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, excavators, skid steer and implements. Should possess knowledge of all equipment, including mowing, gasoline or other powered machinery such as air hammers, compressors, pumping machinery and saws.

Responsible for work projects that utilize excavation, hauling, and maintenance equipment including backhoes, front-end loaders, bulldozers, or grading equipment.

Maintains District equipment in all aspects of preventative maintenance and performs routine maintenance as needed.

Washes, cleans and fuels equipment daily. Provides routine first echelon maintenance for the equipment.

Performs other related work as required.

Qualification Requirements:

Knowledge of:

Extensive knowledge of heavy machinery operation and capabilities.

Operating hand tools and power tools.

Ability to read building plans related to land grades.

Trained to operate heavy equipment.

Correct application and use of the English language, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Excellent Mechanical Skills.

While performing the duties of this job the employee will experience prolonged periods of operating heavy machinery; regularly required to display verbal skills to effectively interface with other staff members and the public; sit or stand for extended periods of time; walk, climb, and navigate uneven terrain; lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 lbs.; kneel, stoop, bend, squat, use hands/fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, controls, and drive a vehicle in all conditions.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Education/Certification/License:

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.

Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License, have a satisfactory driving record, and is insurable by the district to operate District vehicles. Florida Commercial Driving License, Class B, or higher, preferred.

Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in general building/facility maintenance; heavy equipment experience is preferred.

Work Hours: The typical working hours for this position are Monday-Friday, from 7:00am-3:30pm. This schedule is subject to change as required to meet the needs of the district. Must be willing to work overtime and/or alternate schedules as required. This position is essential for disasters and may be required to report to work immediately following a natural disaster (such as a hurricane).

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $16.50 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
