The Behavior Assistant – Special Education provides direct support to students with behavioral, emotional, and social challenges in a variety of educational settings. Under the supervision of a Special Education Teacher, School Psychologist, and Behavior Specialist, the Behavior Assistant implements individualized behavior intervention plans, supports classroom management strategies, and promotes positive student behaviors to enhance learning and participation. The role requires patience, consistency, and a collaborative approach to supporting students with special needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the implementation of behavior intervention plans (BIPs) under the direction of credentialed staff.
- Provide one-on-one and small group behavioral support to students with identified special needs.
- Monitor and document student behavior and progress towards behavioral goals.
- Support classroom teachers in maintaining a positive, structured learning environment.
- Collaborate with special education teams, including teachers, psychologists, and behavior specialists.
- Use proactive strategies to de-escalate challenging behaviors and reinforce positive behavior.
- Assist with data collection for Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and BIPs.
- Participate in professional development and training related to behavior management and special education practices.
- Provide supervision during non-classroom times (recess, lunch, transitions) as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all school policies regarding student privacy and safety.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (Associate’s Degree or higher preferred).
- Experience working with children or adolescents with behavioral challenges, preferably in an educational setting.
- Knowledge of positive behavior supports, de-escalation techniques, and special education practices.
- Ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure situations.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
- Must meet district and/or state requirements for paraprofessional or instructional aide certification.
