EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Seasonal; Variable
STATUS: Hourly; Non-Exempt
HOURS: Camp Season
COMPENSATION: Paid biweekly
SUMMARY: The Assistant Camp Director plays a key administrative and collaborative role in our Summer Camp Program. A versatile leader is needed to assist with effective management of the summer camp staff, contribute to enriching experiences for campers, and support daily operations in the camp office.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support the mission of the Tampa JCCs and Federation: support and enrich the continuity of Jewish life and values in our community.
- Give a 9-week summer commitment (June 2-August 1).
- Ensure campers’ safety at all times.
- Follow and promote all policies and philosophies in all interactions with staff, volunteers, and the public on and off site.
- Demonstrate a high quality of work standards and ethics.
- Under the direction of the Camp Director, implement behavior modifications as described in the Camper’s Code of Conduct.
- Organize and maintain master roster and camper attendance for all camp groups.
- Participate in all camp activities, include those on-campus, off-campus, and undernights/overnights as needed.
- Assist Camp Specialists in camper instruction and managing camper behavior during specialty periods.
- Serve as a role model, mentor, and problem solver for all Counselors and CITs.
- Design and implement the Counselor-In-Training (CIT) leadership program for teens entering grades 9 and 10; lead at least one weekly CIT meeting with educational practical lessons and activities.
- Use learned positive reinforcement methods in managing camper behaviors.
- Relay all pertinent parent communication to Camp Director.
- Participate in weekly staff meetings.
- Work closely with the Camp Director to create and manage daily program schedules.
- Confirm and communicate with field trip venues as needed; ensure Counselors have all necessary documentation and supplies when departing for field trips.
- Wear staff shirt and appropriate swimsuit daily— shirts provided for each staff member.
- Be prepared to assist in any emergency situation involving a camper.
- Communicate with Camp Director regarding incidents or issues that arise.
- Honor confidentiality of the Shanna & Bryan Glazer JCC.
- Stay up-to-date with all procedure and policy changes.
- Retain purchase receipts and submit invoices for camp related expenses.
- Submit facility and maintenance requests in portal as needed.
- Regularly use camp software to communicate with parents and staff including Remind app, emails, and Mailchimp.
- Be prepared to serve as a Counselor or Specialist when substitutes or additional staff is needed.
- Act as the Camp Director in their absence, assuming those additional responsibilities and overseeing all operations to effectively manage all camp programs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Camp Director.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree in Child Development, Psychology, Education or related field, preferred.
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience working with school age children (ages 5-12).
- Professional experience in licensed childcare setting, strongly preferred.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED, currently attending post-secondary school, or possess a graduate degree from a college/university.
- Possess First Aid/CPR certification (can be completed during staff training week).
SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Ability to complete counselor orientation, drug screening, background check, and First Aid/CPR class.
- Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, effectively with staff and campers.
- Ability to make sound decisions that support the mission and are in the best interest of every camper.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Multi-tasking and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and plan accordingly.
- Adaptability, as planned activities and events may need to change unexpectedly.
- Creativity and the ability to take initiative to keep campers engaged throughout the day.
- Ability to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies.
