The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

 

With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.              

 

JOB GOAL:

The role of a coach is to build teacher capacity and understanding of research-based instructional practices by providing instructional and curricular coaching focused on student outcomes for all teachers at the system and building levels utilizing KCKPS-adopted models. The instructional coach supports all teachers in implementing the district’s curriculum, aligned to the instructional model and the district’s strategic plan, resulting in all students graduating Diploma .

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Coaching

  • Create positive relationships with building staff, students, families, and district-level teams.
  • Develop collegial relationships with teachers with the goal of understanding the teacher's current instructional delivery strategy and opportunities to incorporate student-centered coaching and evidence-based instructional methods to meet the individual and collective needs of the students.
  • Implement techniques that include modeling teaching, facilitating group observations, and critiquing to improve teaching and learning.
  • Lead study groups and teacher meetings focusing on instructional planning and effective lesson delivery.
  • Support Professional Learning Communities by analyzing student work and data.
  • Analyze and monitor school-level data results to recommend intervention and relationship-building with identified teachers to impact student behavior, engagement, and achievement.
  • Provide research-based feedback on proposed instructional and classroom management strategies in order to create an environment that promotes evidence and research-based techniques and approaches to classroom management and learning.
  • Collaborate with building leadership in creating a culture of rigor, inquiry, reflection, and collective teacher efficacy.
  • Collaborate with building leaders and district-level leaders in developing and facilitating professional learning.
  • Communicate coaching goals and outcomes with building and district teams.
  • Provide support, feedback, and assistance to curriculum coaches in developing and revising curriculum guides and assessments (formative, summative, common).

  • Maintain organizational systems prioritizing coaching roles.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 3 years effective teaching experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years effective teaching experience preferred
  • Master's Degree in Education or related field (or plan of study on file and active progression to a complete degree program) in an agreed-upon time frame
  • Maintains Kansas Teaching License in the appropriate content area and level
  • Expertise in one or more content areas, including grade-level expectations and course-level expectations
    • EC-5th - Reading Specialist or other advanced training/experience in early literacy instruction preferred
    • 6th-12th - Content area certification(s)
  • Knowledge of content and Standards (National, State, District).
  • Demonstrated effective coaching practices (preferred).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with various instructional technology resources
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and sound professional development practices
  • Maintains a flexible daily and yearly schedule

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and manage a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

COMMUNICATION:

  • Maintains communication with teachers and other school personnel to enhance cooperative action to meet students' educational needs.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding educational records.

 ORGANIZATION:

  • Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties
  • Performs other related work as required

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must occasionally push items of 50 pounds, such as pushing on a bike or wheelchair or moving/rearranging furniture. While performing the job duties, the employee occasionally may visit a child’s home. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 186 Days with an extended contract for additional days. Flexible daily and yearly schedule established by the Director of Diploma Instructional Programs based on a regularly reviewed work plan.

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policy
