What are the responsibilities and job description for the EHS Specialist position at Tenneco Inc.?

SUMMARY:

This position provides environmental, health, and safety support to the site. Reporting to the Plant Manager this individual is accountable for supporting EHS activities including, but not limited to: routine inspections and corrective actions, EHS sampling activities, packing and shipping of waste, EHS technical support, and tasks to ensure EHS performance and compliance. Position is responsible for: completion of appropriate site tasks; assuring completion of assessments and follow up actions; assisting with closure of EHS findings and tasks on a timely basis; supporting emergency actions and planning; tasks to create a strong EHS culture that engages employees throughout the site in EHS teams and processes. In this role 30%-40% of the individuals time will be spent on purchasing. The individual will be required to assist the team in getting orders processed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conduct forklift training and evaluation including classroom instruction and hands on training/assessing.
  2. Conduct lock-out tag-out training to meet plant and compliance requirements.
  3. Conduct Hazardous Communication training to meet plant and compliance requirements.
  4. Conduct overhead crane training to meet plant and compliance requirements.
  5. Record retention of required environmental reports
  6. Monthly EPE and SWPP inspection and reporting
  7. Annual SWPP, air permit, SARA title iii form r, and tier ii reporting
  8. Conduct annual internal EH&S audit as well as appropriate ISO 14001 audits for the plant.
  9. Address and follow up of daily safety issues and concerns
  10. Conduct accident investigations to determine root cause. Document investigation finds and participate in disciplinary process related to safety.
  11. Address ergonomic issues and correct through engineering and maintenance groups
  12. Raise safety awareness by developing new and maintain safety awareness programs ( fall protection, confined spaced, ladder safety )
  13. Coordinate company fire extinguisher program.
  14. Maintain company emergency action plan and coordination
  15. Arrange and conduct PPE assessment, confined space assessment, noise survey, industrial hygiene survey.
  16. Maintains MSDS books and keep them up to date along with reviewing MSDS sheets of proposed materials.
  17. Monitor HFR labeling of containers on production floor to assure compliance.
  18. Review new equipment installation to address EH&S concerns
  19. Leads OSHA inspections on behalf of the plant.
  20. Employee must perform his/her job within acceptable safety, environmental, quality, productivity and performance standards as outlined in plant policies, handbooks and applicable work instructions.
  21. Purchase all MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operating supplies) and all non-productive items (Capital Equipment, Tooling and Services). Evaluate and negotiate these items based on price, quality, service, technical support, terms and freight.
  22. Reconcile invoice and delivery discrepancies.
  23. Participate in Key Issue, Brainstorming, and Continuous Improvement teams.
  24. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience

  1. Two (2) year degree in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, environmental discipline or equivalent.

OR

  1. High School Diploma/GED and 3 years of experience with an emphasis in environmental, health and safety program management and employee training.
  2. OSHA 40-hour (Hazwoper) Certification
  3. RCRA & DOT (Haz-Waste shipping) Certification

Mathematical Skills

Basic Math skills are necessary

Reasoning Ability

  1. Must be able to comprehend written and oral instruction
  2. Must possess basic computer skills
  3. Must have strong organization skills
  4. Strong mechanical aptitude

  1. Must work well in a team environment
  2. Must adhere to all safety rules and regulations
