The maintenance worker apprentice program will provide hands-on training, education and experience required for a municipal maintenance worker position. The apprentice position will rotate throughout the streets, utilities and parks and forestry divisions over the course of 24 months.
The maintenance worker apprentice will learn to carry out daily operations, maintenance and repair to the city’s various infrastructures which includes water and wastewater collection systems, streets, and parks, and forestry.
Throughout the duration or the maintenance worker apprentice program, training and equipment will be provided to allow the candidate the ability to test for a MN Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL), which will include tanker endorsement.

Streets Division
Street, traffic control and right-of-way maintenance and repair.
- Perform maintenance and repair to roadways: sweeping, asphalt repair, trash and debris removal.
- Install and maintain traffic signs/signals.
- Conduct seasonal snow removal and ice control functions.
Utilities Division
Municipal sewer, water and drainage system maintenance and repair.
- Assist in water distribution system repair, replacement of water main pipes and valves; ensure hydrants are operational.
- Perform preventive maintenance to water distribution system via watermain flushing, infrastructure locating and valve exercising.
- Perform preventative maintenance to sanitary sewer system, checks the operations of lift stations, cleans sewer lines with various pieces of equipment, such as sewer jet or vac related equipment.
- Perform storm sewer maintenance to maintain drainage, inspects culverts, catch basins and ditches, remove debris and trash, and rebuilds as needed to the system.
Park & Forestry Division
Maintenance and repair of park facilities and infrastructure, horticulture maintenance, turf maintenance and support events.
- Perform horticulture maintenance, preparing sites for planting, watering and weeding areas, trimming, pruning.
- Perform turf grass maintenance, mowing, fertilizing, and seeding; prepare athletic fields.
- Conduct inspections and repair park facilities and amenities.
- Perform tree maintenance including pruning, removal and planting of trees.
- Assist in reforestation program including the determination of planting locations and maintenance of plant.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Minnesota driver’s license. Training and equipment will be provided to allow the candidate the ability to test for a MN Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) with tanker endorsement.
Desired Qualifications
- Valid Class A or Class B Minnesota commercial learner permit (CLP) or Class A or Class B Minnesota commercial driver’s license (CDL).
- A valid Driver’s License with the ability to obtain a Class A MN commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsement with appropriate training.
- Previous experience in a municipal maintenance position.
- Ability to operate with light/heavy duty equipment.
- Ability to operate a computer or tablet and necessary programs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
To perform the essential functions of this position, the employee will frequently be required to stand, sit, walk, kneel (bend leg at knee and rest on knee), crouch (bend at knees), use arm muscles over extended periods, use leg muscles over extended periods, perform overhead work (over shoulder height), lift, push/pull, carry, climb, bend at waist and/or reach (extend hands and arms in any direction), handle objects (grasp, turn, repetitive hand motion)
The employee must be able to lift/carry items weighing from 0 – 50 pounds. This position will occasionally require the employee to lift items weighing up to 100 pounds. Items lifted/carried include items from all divisions such as tools, ladders, buckets, branches, logs, paint, fencing lumber, 50lb bags, seed, fertilizer, blocks, shovels, signs, posts valves, pipe and repair clamps.
This position requires working outdoors in various weather conditions; working indoors; working with chemicals and working near fumes/vapors.
With training, this position requires operating machinery or vehicles to perform work functions. Equipment operated includes hand and mechanical equipment, such as shovels, backpack blowers, skid steer, light/heavy duty trucks, snow removal equipment, etc.
