P.E. Teacher

Description

The Northwest School is a college-preparatory, co-educational independent school near the heart of downtown Seattle. We offer a rich and challenging program to about 380 students in grades 6 through 12, including international students, many of whom live in our campus dormitory.

Our PE classes are taught by experienced coaches and players (some professional and semi-professional) of the sport they teach during the school day in the PE block, and they believe that physical movement is necessary for one’s overall health and wellness. PE teachers coach a particular sport each season, and through their coaching teach students how to contribute to a team in positive ways and cultivate healthy competition.  

Northwest seeks part-time .25 FTE middle school physical education teachers to teach one or more of the following trimester-long one courses: 

• Cross Country (trimester one) 
• Volleyball (trimester one) 
• Soccer (trimester one) 
• Basketball (trimester two) 
• Bouldering (trimester two) 
• Variety (trimester two) 
• Ultimate Frisbee (trimester three) 
• Urban Hiking (trimester three) 
• Track and Field (trimester three) 

Essential Functions: 

• Teach one section of middle school physical education  
• Collaborate with other physical education teachers  
• Coach the team for home and away games 
• Plan effective and engaging practices 
• Teach skills that promote health and wellness  
• Supervise students until every student leaves campus after games 
• Communicate with families and students regularly regarding competition schedules, equipment needs, etc.  
• Cultivate positive family partnerships 
• Cultivate positive relationships with league schools 

Participate fully in the life of the school which includes collaborating effectively and collegially with a teaching team, grade-level, and department; engage regularly in formal, ongoing professional development beyond school based in- service; support colleagues and the school by substituting for absent teachers; participate in meetings, committees, experiential events, and community gatherings; support admissions events; and know, understand, and uphold the mission, philosophy and values of the school. All teachers contribute to the school mission and community with activities such as supporting student social-emotional learning, interest groups (clubs), social events, and grade level trips. This list is not exhaustive, and to participate fully in the life of the school, teachers may need to participate in ways beyond what has been listed here.  

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

• All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the school's mission, values, and philosophy, especially related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, social justice, environmental sustainability, and global perspective. 
• A bachelor's degree and minimum 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the job's essential functions. This includes demonstration of the ability to teach a wide range of skill levels for a sport. 
• Demonstrated success with culturally responsive pedagogy. 
• Experience teaching a diverse student body through a social justice lens. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Experience and interest in teaching middle school students. 
• Experience teaching a range of skill levels within a team, from beginner to experienced.  

Compensation: 

Salary range is $57,369- $104,618 based on education & years of experience.
