Job Summary
The Executive Minister at The Riverside Church will work with the Senior Minister in the supervision, coaching, and development of the clergy team in faithfulness to the mission, vision, and values of the church. The Executive Minister will assist the Senior Minister in creating and shaping the church’s program calendar in keeping with the church’s collaborative vision. The Executive Minister has responsibility for planning and facilitating all worship at the church with an understanding that worship should form, inform, and transform God’s people.
The Executive Minister has demonstrated skill in inviting systemic change, maintaining administrative coherence, and holding theological integrity.
The Executive Minister has a clear understanding of the role of music in liturgy. With leadership that honors the ecumenical Christian community of the church as well as the larger Christian witness and that celebrates the grand diversities of the church, the Executive Minister will work closely with the Director of Music and the clergy team to ensure that meaningful worship is a regular marker of life at The Riverside Church.
The Executive Minister reports to the Senior Minister.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Stands in for the Senior Minister in their absence.
- Advises the Senior Minister on clergy personnel matters and assists in preparing written evaluations of the clergy team, subject to the approval of the Senior Minister.
- Works with the Senior Minister to coordinate new program development under long range planning.
- Serves with the Senior Minister to liturgically interpret the mission and need of the congregation to the larger community.
- Other duties as assigned by the Senior Minister.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Oversee program calendar submissions and approval.
- Oversee and coordinate all Riverside worship services in partnership with Senior Minister and Director of Music.
- Supervisory support for clergy team and supervise worship administrative assistant.
- Serve as liaison to the Worship Commission and attend its meetings in the absence of the Senior Minister.
- Prepare and administer worship budget.
Experience and Education Requirements:
- A clear commitment to Jesus Christ and to the church as God’s instrument of mission to the world.
- Membership and ordination in a denomination which is a member of the National Council of Churches.
- Master of Divinity degree required. Doctorate preferred.
- 10 years of experience in a church setting involved with worship and leadership.
- Experience in a multi-cultural and intergenerational church setting.
- Demonstrated ability with different forms of liturgy, various Christian traditions, and adept at writing prayers and liturgies.
- A clear understanding of the theological position of the Riverside Church and its commitment to faith development and social justice, and a willingness to work with the church to achieve its ministry.
- Experience in using ritual and worship to educate and form.
- Experience in pastoral care, preferably in a congregation with a multi-cultural membership and an ethnically diverse staff.
- Demonstrated ability interacting in a collaborative manner with other ministries and staff.
- Experience in working collaboratively with staff and an understanding of the dynamics of staff relationships, implementing change, performing strategic planning, and conflict resolution.
- Experience in administration, developing budgets, controlling expenditures, and supervising staff.
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
- Facility with technology and digital platforms.
