Hours: 3pm - 7pm (some days until 8pm)

• School Break hours (1 pm - 6 pm)
• *They may have opportunities for additional hours during weekend rentals

SALARY: $20.00 per hour. This is a part-time position to assist with the Merlo Gym programs and activities and will involve working variable hours (approximately 20 hours per week) including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of the Merlo Gym Manager, the Recreation Leader will promote, organize and provide personal leadership to a variety of recreation activities at Merlo Gym Community Center.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:
 

• Organize, plan, and implement a diversified program including sports, crafts, STEM, and active and passive games in an indoor and outdoor setting.
• Requisition, issue, receive and oversee the use of equipment and materials.
• Ensure safety precautions are observed during free play and on the premises by informing and enforcing set rules.
• Care for and maintain equipment and facilities.
• Coordinate and schedule instructional classes with community partners and business owners.
• Assist in the preparation and implementation of special events and services.
• Assist with the implementation of the sports program.
• Maintain effective communication and harmonious relationships with the public, participants, and associates.
• Prepare, maintain, and submit required records of attendance, programs, participation, fees, etc.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS:
 

• Knowledge of organizing and planning recreation activities.
• Knowledge of recreational/enrichment programs as it relates to sports, STEM, arts, and special activities and play.
• Enjoy working with people of all ages.
• Excellent customer service and communication skills.
• Demonstrated leadership and organizational abilities.
• Flexible and can easily adapt to changes and work schedules.
• Ability to establish and maintain an effective relationship with staff, students, parents, and the public.

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING/EDUCATION:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
 

One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience:

• Providing recreation and enrichment programs
• Working with kids/youth
• Creating and facilitating structured programs with a focus on enrichment (STEMS, Arts, and Sports)

 
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:
 

• Ability to work in a standard community center environment requiring prolonged sitting, standing, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, crouching and stooping in the performance of daily activities. May require constant walking, standing (including on concrete or uneven ground), climbing and exercising full range of motion of the arms, hands, wrists and fingers.
• Occasional pushing, pulling, dragging and lifting equipment and/or office items weighing 25 - 50 lbs.
• Ability to hear and convey detailed or important instructions or information verbally and accurately.
• Ability to communicate with both the public and co-workers in a clear and concise manner.
• Ability to endure exposure to outdoor conditions and inclement weather.
