The position of back server is a supporting role in Herons, the 5-star restaurant inside the Umstead Hotel and Spa. You and the front server will work as a team to make sure each of your guests has the perfect dining experience. While the front server is the face of the section, the back server is the engine, doing the behind-the-scenes work to ensure the proper flow of our 4-course pre-fixe dinner service. Your main duties will be: table maintenance, running food, placing silverware and glassware for each course, grabbing drinks from the bar, and communicating with your front server for any additional needs - teamwork is essential.

The proper candidate must be hospitable, highly professional, have strict attention to detail, and most importantly have a passion for fine dining and chef-inspired food. Restaurant experience is a must, along with the ability to work holidays.

Job Requirements:

• Report to work at the scheduled time, neatly groomed and in a clean uniform.
• Accurately deliver food from kitchen, Hot and Cold.
• Assist in the clearing and resetting of tables, and food running
• Coordinate activities with Servers to execute a smooth flowing dining experience for guests.
• Display a cordial, accommodating, and hospitable disposition while interacting with guests.
• In addition, other duties may be required as directed by your Manager.

Education:

• High school or equivalent education required

Experience:

• Serving experience required, some wine knowledge preferred.

Licenses or Certificates:

• Ability to obtain and/or maintain any government required licenses, certificates or permits.

Grooming:

• All employees must maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance per The Umstead Hotel standards.

Physical:

• Most work tasks are performed indoors though there will be also be restaurant seating as well as cocktail tables outdoors on the terrace.
• May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, including excessive heat and cold.
• Physical ability to walk and handle trays, food items, glasses, etc. in a safe and constructive manner for at least 4 hours at a time.
• Must be able to exert well-paced ability in limited space and to reach other locations of the hotel on a timely basis.
• Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. on a regular and continuing basis.
• Must be able to bend, stoop, squat and stretch to fulfill cleaning tasks occasionally.
• Talking and hearing occur continuously in the process of communicating with guests, supervisors and subordinates.
• Vision occurs continuously with the most common visual functions being those of near and color vision and depth perception.
• Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment.
• Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English, both written and oral.
