The Health Sciences Research Core Facility at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Research Technician. This position provides support to the facility manager with the daily operations of the University of Pittsburgh Gnotobiotic core facility. The incumbent is responsible for the following: - provides mammalian specimen husbandry and care for a variety of laboratory mammalian specimen species in accordance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and internally established policies and procedures - developing and maintaining proficiency with the mammalian management software to support the Gnotobiotic facility business functions at the facility level, including but not limited to mammalian specimen receipt and census management. - conducts inspections of mammalian specimen housing and procedure rooms, autoclaves, corridors, and storage and support areas on a regular basis - carries out sample gathering for microbiological testing of gnotobiotic isolators - assists with experimental procedures performed on animal specimens. - provides daily autoclaving, isolator re-stocking, mammalian specimen husbandry care and care procedures and/or performs veterinary technical procedures as needed. - manages the inventory of mammalian diets, enrichment devices, PPE supplies, cages and water bottles, cage wash chemicals, and other supplies routinely utilized in the provision of mammalian specimen husbandry and daily facility operations - ensures autoclaves mechanical cage washers, bedding dump stations, automated bedding dispensers, water bottle filling stations, and other cage wash equipment are maintained in good working condition and that preventive maintenance procedures are performed on schedule. - assists with maintaining appropriate records in compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies and procedures - performs other duties based upon departmental needs as determined by the incumbent’s supervisor.
Provides animal care to laboratory animals, including feeding, watering, enrichment, health observations and basic medical treatments. Performs cage cleaning and facility sanitization procedures in accorance with standard operating procedures and maintains timely and accurate documentation.
Sitting at bench and standing for long periods, walking between buildings, lifting and bending for general operations including putting away lab supplies. Reading small print on tubes, vials etc.
