The Asian Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh seeks an experienced leader to direct one of seven coordinating sites of the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia (NCTA). In its 27th year, NCTA expands education about East Asia at K-12 level through professional development, curriculum development, and resource dissemination. The Director leads programming for K-12 educators across an 11-state region.

Major Responsibilities

  • Regional Program Administration
    • Oversee $556,182 annual budget plus supplemental grants across eleven states (AL, DE, IL, KY, LA, MD, MI, MN, OH, PA, WV)
    • Design courses to meet evolving K-12 educator needs
    • Coordinate and ensure quality of all NCTA programming in region
    • Develop relationships with university departments, centers, school districts, museums, and K-12 educators
    • Oversee curriculum projects and contribute to national NCTA curriculum
  • National Consortium Collaboration
    • Collaborate with six other NCTA directors on consortium-wide initiatives
    • Pursue innovations in East Asia-related K-12 professional development
    • Maintain national program website and visibility
    • Develop annual renewal proposals and submit reports to The Freeman Foundation
    • Participate in biannual directors' meetings
    • Collaborate on joint courses, conference exhibits, and presentations
  • Program Leadership
    • Teach occasional NCTA courses and serve as guest lecturer
    • Design and lead K-12 educator summer study tours in East Asia
    • Maintain NCTA Board of Advisors of master teachers
    • Secure supplemental funding and identify new instructional consultants
  • Administrative and External Relations
    • Supervise two full-time and one part-time employees
    • Act as University liaison with Freeman Foundation
    • Ensure grant compliance with university protocols
    • Advocate for K-12 Asian studies within University
  • Travel Requirements
    • Travel to other NCTA Directors at least twice annually
    • Visit seminar sites and museum locations
    • Assist with national conference projects and presentations
    • Lead study tours to East Asia

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's in Asian studies with at least 5 years of work experience in East Asian studies
  • Extensive experience in K-12 educator professional development programming
  • Administrative and financial experience working with large grants
  • Demonstrated commitment to enriching teaching and learning about East Asia at K-12 level
  • Ability to keep abreast of current research and scholarship in East Asian studies

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master's, PhD, or EdD in Asian Studies with significant related coursework
  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities
  • Strong relationship-building capabilities
  • Experience in educational and office technology
  • Proficiency in an East Asian language
  • Lived experience in East Asia

Performs budgetary functions, resolves complex program administration issues, and oversees contracts and negotiations with service providers. Improves policies and procedures and ensures effective overall operations.

Essential Functions
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates programs in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders and various community partners.
  • Creates and implements strategic visions, plans, and timelines; identifies important projects, ventures, and other partnership opportunities.
  • Prepares and monitors budgets; oversees financial controls, accounts, payroll, investments, and other financial activities.
  • Serves as a main point of contact regarding program administrative activities; resolves complex issues.
  • Oversees contracts and negotiations with vendors and service providers.
  • Monitors, implements, and improves policies and procedures; ensures efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
  • Prepares complex reports, projections, and analyses for senior leadership and community partners.
Physical Effort

Moderate physical effort required. May be required to stand/move for several hours at a time. May be required to move objects up to 50 pounds with or without assistance of equipment.
