Position Summary
Under the direction of the Division Vice President, the Estimator is responsible for analyzing blueprints and other documentation to prepare cost, material, and labor estimates for products, projects, or services.
Qualifications
- Education: The knowledge, skills and abilities typically acquired through the completion of a high school diploma or GED, college degree is preferred.
- Years of Relevant Work Experience: Minimum of 1 year estimating complex/multi-phase mechanical projects.
- Certificates/Licenses: Valid driver’s license. Satisfactory driving record.
- Physical Job Requirements: Required to sit, stand and move throughout Company facilities.
Skills and Competencies
- Technical Skills: This position requires advanced proficiency with mechanical estimating software (preferably QuickPen); advanced proficiency with commonly used mechanical concepts, practices and procedures; knowledge of applicable building codes and industry installation practices; and the ability to read and interpret construction drawing and blueprints.

Key Activities
- Understand Project. Gain thorough understanding of potential projects by reviewing all available project documentation, discussing project with salesperson, and/or reviewing project site.
- Prepare Estimate. Utilize QuickPen (or other automated estimating software) to establish detailed project cost estimates. Develop estimates utilizing the most advantageous/efficient construction practices. Obtain bids from vendors and subcontractors. Obtain bid bonds when necessary. Achieve customer/Company expectations regarding turnaround time for bids.
- Turnovers. Prepare initial project documentation for “turning over” project to Operations.Participate in turnover meetings. Assist engineering/design/CAD in the preparation of project drawings.
- Maintain/Enhance Estimating System and Procedures. Perform periodic reviews of actual vs estimated costs on key projects to help evaluate ongoing labor productivity and estimating accuracy. Participate in post mortem reviews of projects as requested. Adjust estimating system and/or procedures to continue to improve overall estimating accuracy.
- Bid Tracer. Enter bid requests into Bid Tracer in a timely manner. Communicate bid participation to customers.
- Take Offs. Prepare periodic partial take offs to assist Project Managers in forecasting cost at completion.
- Participate in the development and implementation of Company best practices.
