Police Sergeant (Internal Only)

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a Police Sergeant include:

• Supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a safe working environment; and, making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
• Reviews and supervises investigations. Reviews case status, provides case management and staff coverage. Reviews activity reports and monitors progress of investigations.
• Oversees and assists with law enforcement and Officer duties. Monitors radio transmissions, calls and requests. Maintains law enforcement by providing patrol services. Enforces traffic laws and regulations, gathers information and secures evidence in criminal investigations, interviews suspects and witnesses, performs searches, apprehends and/or arrests violators and provides court testimony.
• Performs administrative activities in support of department operations. Prepares and reviews reports, documentation and correspondence. Maintains records and files. Conducts meetings, briefings and inspections. Assists in monitoring and preparing budget and in reviewing and developing policies and procedures. Participates in/on hearings, committees, and boards.

1. Written Examination. A written examination is tentatively scheduled for January 13, 2025.
 
2. Written Exercise. A written exercise will assigned. Candidates will present their written exercise during the oral interview portion of the promotional testing process. If the written exercise is not submitted by the due date, the candidate will be eliminated from the promotional testing selection process. The due date of the written exercise will be announced during the candidate Orientation Session. The Orientation Session is scheduled for December 11, 2024.
 
3. Oral Interview. Oral interviews are tentatively scheduled for January 29-30, 2025. Only those candidates scoring a passing grade of 70% or above on the written examination will be invited to participate in the oral interview. Additional oral interview dates may be added if necessary.The ideal candidate is someone who effectively exceeds customer needs by building productive relationships, and taking responsibility for customer satisfaction and loyalty.  You actively participate as a member of a team to move the team toward the completion of goals and produce quality outcomes.  You are committed to our safety philosophy, and you take great pride in proactively managing time and resources to ensure that work is completed efficiently while accomplishing objectives and achieving goals beyond what is required.
 
This is an internal recruitment. It is open to Gilbert Police sworn/certified personnel who meet all four (4) the criteria listed below.

1. Tenure: Candidates must meet one of the following tenure specific criteria:

1. Currently hold the rank of Gilbert police officer with three (3) years of Gilbert police officer experience - all three years of service must be attained on or before January 31, 2025; OR
2. Currently hold the rank of Gilbert police officer with two (2) years of Gilbert police officer experience – these two years of Gilbert experience must be attained on or before January 31, 2025 AND have three (3) years of certified police officer experience with another law enforcement agency. This equates to five (5) years of combined experience.  

1. Education: Associate degree or 60 credit hours equivalency from an accredited college or university on or before January 31, 2025.
   1. Candidates who are enrolled in a bachelor’s degree or higher degree program but have not been awarded an associate degree will need to go through the equivalency review process. 
   2. Questions about equivalency should be directed to HR Business Partner Aura Nelson. Candidates seeking an equivalency review should be prepared to provide transcripts.
      
      
2. Licenses & Certifications: Candidates must meet both of the following licensing and certification related criteria. 

1. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license
2. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) certification as well as certifications required in the Department General Orders

1. Availability to work varying shifts depending on assignment.

This position is FLSA Non-Exempt - eligible for overtime compensation.
