The Town of Nantucket is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Entry-Level IT Generalist to join our on-site Information Technology Department. This is a non-remote position based on Nantucket.

This vital role blends administrative duties with first-level IT helpdesk support, requiring strong organizational skills, excellent customer service, and a working knowledge of basic IT systems.

 

Under the general direction of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) or designee, the IT Generalist supports the smooth day-to-day operations of the department, assists with procurement and data management tasks, and serves as the first point of contact for internal helpdesk inquiries.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred (Associate’s accepted); 2 years relevant office experience.
  • Proficient computer literacy.
  • Valid Class D driver’s license.

Position Details:

  • Hourly rate $39.76 (new hires) - $50.36 (employees hired prior to July 1, 2012 with 20 years of service with the Town of Nantucket) *effective July 1, 2025
  • Position Type: Full-Time, LIUNA Union
  • Schedule: 40 hours per week

The IT Generalist performs a variety of administrative and IT helpdesk duties requiring the exercise of moderate independent judgement. Facilitates the day-to-day administrative functions of the IT department and serves as first level helpdesk support.  

Supervision Required:   Under the general supervision of the Chief Technology Officer or his/her designee, the employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently with specific instruction. Supervisor reviews work to remain aware of progress, work methods, and technical accuracy.

Supervisory Responsibility: The employee is not held accountable to supervise other Town employees.

Confidentiality: The employee has regular access to confidential information in accordance with the State Public Records Law.

Accountability: Consequences of errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may include adverse public relations, legal repercussions, and missed deadlines.

Judgment: Numerous standardized practices, procedures or general instructions govern the work performed and in some cases may require additional interpretation. Independent judgment is needed to facilitate exceptional customer service and maintain confidentiality.

Complexity: The work consists of a variety of office duties which generally follow standardized practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines. The sequence of work and/or the procedures followed vary according to the nature of the transaction and/or the information involved, or sought, in a particular situation.

Work Environment: Work is performed in a standard office environment. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting. There are frequent interruptions.

Nature and Purpose of Public Contact: Relationships with co-workers and the public involve frequent explanation, discussion or interpretation of practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines in order to render service, plan or coordinate work efforts, or resolve operating problems.

Occupational Risk: Risk exposure to the employee is similar to that found in a standard office setting.

  • General administrative functions including answering phones, physical and electronic filing, data entry, document management, correspondence and mailings.
  • Monitors supplies and orders when necessary and/or directed.
  • Assists with the IT Department purchasing process by processing purchase requisitions and performing various related accounting functions using MUNIS, the Massachusetts statewide contract system (CommBuys) and other database software systems.
  • Assists with obtaining quotes and processes orders for IT supplies and equipment.
  • Assists with the preparation of contracts and agreements under the supervision of the CTO or IT Manager.
  • Monitors and triages the helpdesk and responds to basic requests. Identifies tickets that need to be escalated to senior staff.
  • Assists with user account setup, security and management for network access, email and business system applications.
  • Assists with software license management and equipment inventory tracking.
  • Maintains current information on the IT Department website.
  • Designated building maintenance contact for work orders.
  • Monitors and schedules IT Department vehicle maintenance pursuant to the Central Fleet guidelines.
  • Designated new hire onboarding IT contact in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Assists the CTO with data management, security and basic reporting as requested.
  • Assists with the department scheduling needs as directed.
  • Compiles and transmits IT Department payroll transmittal.
  • Performs other related duties as may be required or assigned.

Education and Experience: Bachelors’ degree preferred, will consider an Associates, and two or more years of related work experience in an office environmentor any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

 Special Requirements: Proficient computer literacy, typing speed of at minimum 38-40 words per minute, valid Class D motor vehicle drivers’ license.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skill

Knowledge: Working knowledge of common policies, practices and procedures of municipal government and applicable state and/or federal laws and regulations pertinent to position functions, very helpful. Knowledge of office software (word processing, financial and data base management and spread sheet applications) and the Internet in support of department operations. Knowledge of basic computer and network troubleshooting a plus.

Abilities: Ability to receive and process invoices, payments, and inquiries in a timely manner. Ability to complete multiple tasks in a timely, detailed, and accurate manner. Ability to communicate affectively by telephone and email. Ability to analyze, troubleshoot and solve technical related issued associated with the Town’s information infrastructure. Effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact with all levels of Town staff in a pleasant and professional manner.

Skills: Proficient skills in the operation of a personal computer and office equipment and the application of office software. Proficiency in business mathematical skills, recordkeeping, basic accounts payable/receivable, and customer service skills. Data entry and database experience.

Physical Demands: Little or no physical demands are required to perform the work. Work effort principally involves sitting and walking to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, and standing. The employee is occasionally required to lift objects such as books, office equipment, and copy paper.

Motor Skills:  Duties are largely mental rather than physical, but the job requires the application of basic motor skills for activities such as moving objects, operating a telephone system, computer and/or most other office equipment, word processing, filing, and sorting of papers.

Visual Demands: The employee may be required to read documents and reports for understanding and routinely for analytical purposes. The employee is rarely required to determine color differences.
