What are the responsibilities and job description for the Geologist Trainee/Assistant Geologist position at Transportation, Department of?
In order to be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law, or be appointed in accordance with provisions provided by Civil Service Law, Section 55b/c.
NOTE: In accordance with Chapter 475 of the Laws of 2014, all professional geologists in New York State must obtain licensure under Title VIII of the Education law; based on this, if appointed to this position, you will be required to obtain your Fundamentals of Geology within two years of your permanent appointment date.
The Central Testing Laboratory:
The candidate of this position will work under a higher-level supervisor or manager in performing various field and laboratory investigations related to the quality, characteristics, and performance of aggregates used in asphalt and Portland cement concrete. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Participating in the geologic evaluation of aggregates sources.
- Evaluating quarrying and mining procedures to produce consistent, quality aggregate to asphalt and concrete mixtures to supply highway and bridge construction.
- Evaluating the physical and chemical performance of aggregate sources in asphalt and concrete.
- Evaluating the petrographic suitability of aggregate sources for their skid-resistance properties in pavements.
- Coordinating and conducting field work with Regional NYSDOT staff.
- Interfacing with aggregate, asphalt, and concrete producers and their geologic consultants.
- Traveling for field work and to aggregate sources located throughout New York State and surrounding states; including overnight travel.
- Reviewing the content of geological source reports.
- Gathering date and samples related to aggregate failures and participating in the resolution of quality issues.
- Providing technical guidance for the Department engineers, consultants, and aggregate producers.
- Utilizing geologic laboratory equipment such as petrographic and polarized light microscopes, rock saws, and thin section polishing tools.
- Conducting optical refractive index testing.
- Performing petrographic analysis of aggregate samples.
- Performing acid insoluble residue, copper nitrate staining, and other physical and chemical tests on aggregate samples.
- Preparing test reports.
- Using appropriate databases and computer programs to search and tabulate field and laboratory data.
- Preparing field reports and correspondences relative to field investigations and geological source report review.
- Performing other duties, as required.
The Geotechnical Engineering Bureau:
The candidate will work under the direction of a Professional Geologist. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Performing geotechnical, geological and geophysical investigations to gain information on highway alignments, building and other structural sites, materials sources, groundwater evaluations, and other similar projects.
- Responding to reported rockfalls at rock slope sites, evaluating stability of rock slopes and providing remediation recommendations.
- Evaluating geologic soundness of stockpiled stone fill items.
- Serving as a technical advisor on construction projects during the excavations for both shallow and deep structure foundations.
- Using computer-related techniques in engineering and geologic projects.
- Frequent travel (30%) including overnight stays to sites statewide, will be required.
- Performing other duties, as required.
The Materials Engineering Bureau:
The candidate will work under the direction of a Professional Geologist. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Participating in the geologic evaluation of aggregate sources.
- Evaluating quarrying and mining procedures to produce consistent, quality aggregates for asphalt and concrete mixtures so supply highway and bridge construction.
- Evaluating the physical and chemical performance of aggregate sources in asphalt and concrete.
- Evaluating the petrographic suitability of aggregate sources for their skid-resistance4 properties in pavements.
- Coordinating and conducting field work with Regional NYSDOT staff.
- Interfacing with aggregate, asphalt, and concrete producers and their geologic consultants.
- Traveling (20%) for field work and to aggregate sources located throughout New York State and surrounding states, including overnight travel.
- Reviewing the content of geological source reports.
- Gathering data and samples related to aggregate failures and participating in the resolution of quality issues.
- Providing technical guidance for the Department engineers, consultants, and aggregate producers.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
