Essential Function
Advance the institutional mission by providing academic advising to new, continuing, and returning students. Support and guide students in addressing the following student achievement goals: graduation, transfer/transition, career exploration, course selection, program navigation, academic support, and academic planning. Create a culture of welcome and care for students.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a related liberal arts or social sciences discipline is required. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: One to two years’ experience in educational support programming, advisement, or counseling. Experience with low income, first generation and disabled students in a higher education setting preferred.

Knowledge: Knowledge of student development theory including influences of culture, gender, class, environment, and age. Knowledge of student outreach services and activities.

Skills: Strong written and oral communication skills as well as strong student service orientation required. Ability to analyze and solve problems. Self-directed with the ability to work independently.

Responsibilities
1. Provides academic advising focused on helping new, continuing, and returning students explore their career options, create educational/degree plans, course selection; tracks student progress and reports on activities as needed.

2. Works closely with and supports the success of students through outreach, appointments, workshops, and other activities.

3. Assists new students with the onboarding process including New Student Orientation (NSO), introduction to the student portal, and registration.

4. Acts as a liaison for assigned high schools for registration and orientation events.

5. Collaborates with faculty and staff in college departments to meet objectives and activities that foster student success.

6. Enforces registration policies and student course placements as they relate to prerequisites and placement and keeps accurate records and documentation.

7. Offers counsel to faculty and staff on matters of course selection sequences, registration processes, and the implementation of student placement measures.

8. Coordinates and assists with the supervision of student success initiatives (i.e. mentoring, etc). and student workers if appropriate.

9. Assists in training staff and faculty relating to matters of course selection sequences and registration.

10. Assists in training new academic advisors with department and college policies and procedures.

11. Assists with program evaluation, reports, and grant applications as needed.

12. Assists with implementing recruitment and retention activities.

13. Adheres to all federal, state, local, and College regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines.

14. Serves on institutional committees and external committees as appropriate.

15. Provides students with referrals to internal and external resources as necessary.

16. Monitors and documents academic progress of students on assigned caseload.

17. Assists with other institutional activities related to student enrollment as needed.

18. Participates in professional activities including but not limited to: the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), the Illinois Academic Advising Association (ILACADA), or other professional organizations which encourage continuous professional growth and development as an Academic Advisor and Student Affairs professional.

19. Makes self available to work days, evenings, and weekends as necessary to advance the work of the department.

20. Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.
