POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Assistant Director for Inclusive Excellence in Assessment of STEM Teaching will assist in the evaluation and assessment of all CEILS inclusive excellence in teaching and programming for Life and Physical Sciences faculty. A central responsibility will be to assist in the implementation and coordination of UCLA’s AAAS STEMM Equity Achievement Change (SEA Change) initiative. The aim of this initiative is to reduce equity gaps in large enrollment STEM courses. This position will also assist in the assessment of additional CEILS Inclusive Excellence in Teaching grants and initiatives, and will teach in the Life Sciences Core. This position is a full-time, 24-month appointment, step 9-12 , and the salary range is from $101,425- $109,158, commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities:
The candidate will organize, manage, and lead assessment projects with Life and Physical Sciences departments that have requested to examine course-level data that indicates there are differences in course outcomes between students who are underrepresented in STEM and those who are not. This position works directly with the SEA Change Directors to facilitate equity-minded conversations with departmental leadership, faculty, students, and staff. Using a structured protocol, the Assistant Director will implement interventions (e.g. interviews, focus groups) to collect additional qualitative and quantitative data and formulate the next steps in the iterative process to decrease disparity gaps. Another key component of this position is to advocate for institutional change in pedagogical practices with the evaluation of CEILS courses and initiatives that implement inclusive and evidence-based teaching strategies. A primary focus of this position will be to teach in the Life Sciences, design and collect formative assessments along with program evaluation of the impact of these courses.

Responsibilities:
  • Organize, manage, and co-facilitate Life and Physical Sciences departmental action teams and their engagement in the SEA Change Initiative.
  • Lead the collection of departmental SEA Change data closer to practice and disseminate results to departmental teams and the campus-wide SEA Change Leadership Team.
  • Contribute to and assist in UCLA’s SEA Change Initiative program evaluation activities.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of formative assessments and program evaluation of CEILS grants and initiatives.
  • Assist in the expansion of Physical Science’s Inclusive Excellence Programs
  • Evaluate the impact of participating in CEILS programming on faculty by tracking participation, gathering satisfaction data, and where possible, collecting information on change in teaching practice and the impact on students.
  • Teach the course Career Exploration in the Life Sciences (LS 110), and adapt it for Physical Science Undergraduate students.
  • Administer and assess the CEILS Learning Assistants Program and teach LS192: Introduction to Collaborative Learning Theory and Practice
  • Work with the CEILS team to facilitate professional development programs and workshops for faculty and instructors in the Life and Physical Sciences.
  • Represent UCLA and CEILS by participating in regional, national, and international educational conferences.
  • Publish scholarly work related to education research.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D in a Life or Physical Sciences discipline and demonstrated experience:
  • With qualitative data collection, analysis, and dissemination
  • Working with and facilitating STEM Faculty Learning communities or Departmental Action Teams
  • In undergraduate and graduate teaching at the university level
  • In curriculum development (i.e. design, evaluate, and improve instructional materials)
  • Familiarity with current research on the science of learning at the post-secondary level
Additional qualifications

In addition, the candidate must possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills. English fluency is required. Ability to interact effectively in programs and activities involving faculty, staff, and students of differing social, educational, and economic backgrounds. Ability to be flexible and pay attention to detail while keeping in mind the overall mission of the Center, College and University.
