Overview

CRASH SIMULATION ENGINEER (NHTSA):

 

Bowhead is seeking a Crash Simulation Engineer to support the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration contract headquartered in Washington D.C. The position will be fully remote. The crash simulation engineer is responsible for the development, evaluation and/or application of finite element and/or lumped parameter models in vehicle crash safety & human injury research. This position requires knowledge of vehicle design, crash safety countermeasures, laboratory measurement techniques, vehicle sled modeling and analysis, and test/evaluation devices such as crash test dummies and human body models. Individuals will be required to provide significant technical leadership and contribute to the technical direction of projects.

 

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, coordinate and control the progress of project work to meet client objectives
  • Lead technical efforts and keep up to date with current industry best practices
  • Create sled FE models, position various crash test dummies and human FE models, carry out vehicle impacts and perform injury analysis
  • Perform post simulation data analysis such as injury analysis per FMVSS/NCAP regulations and statistical techniques
  • Provide recommendations to client regarding planning, analysis and reporting efforts
  • Develop technical reports and presentations to communicate complex research in a clear and comprehensive manner

Qualifications

  • MS in engineering (mechanical engineering preferred)
  • Technical areas of expertise include engineering dynamics, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, biomechanical engineering and/or structural engineering
  • Experience in the evaluation of laboratory test results from impact testing including vehicles, vehicle components, anthropomorphic dummies, and/or post mortem human subjects
  • Experience with running vehicle crash simulations using LS-DYNA (2 years of experience)
  • Demonstrated experience in performing post-crash simulation injury analysis such as HIC, BrIC, Nij, femur/tibia forces etc.
  • Experience with Design of Experiments, optimization, and statistical analysis
  • Knowledge of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS)
  • Demonstrated experience with optimization programs such as LS-OPT and 3D modeling programs such as ANSA, META, Oasys Primer etc.
  • Familiarity with crash investigation reports and crash reconstruction methods
  • Good written and verbal communication skills as evidenced by technical publications / conference presentations
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory measurement techniques and knowledge of the laws of physics, continuum mechanics, and statistical data treatments
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Python Programming
  • Car crash modeling and simulation
  • Crash data analysis and accident reconstruction
  • Understanding of biomechanical structures (human body response and tolerance)
  • LS-OPT experience, Design of Experiments (DOE), optimization

Physical Demands:

• Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time• Must be able to twist, bend, and squat periodically

 

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a Public Trust (NAC) level clearance.
