General Summary of Position:
Incumbents of positions in this series install heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment including related fixtures; check heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including hot water, steam systems, DDC in a variety of buildings (Academic, Resident Halls, Lab) and perform related work as required. The basic purpose of this work is to install, maintain and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- Current Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician License
- Applicants must have applicable experience of full-time, or equivalent part-time technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning systems, as an HVAC Technician with at least 5 of those years as a Refrigeration Technician licensee
- Knowledge of the standard preventative maintenance procedures for heating ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning systems
- Ability to successfully supervise, including planning and assigning work Knowledge of the methods for lubricating machinery and equipment
- Knowledge and skill in the uses of small hand and power tools
- Knowledge of the safety practices and procedure followed in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and related electrical systems
- Knowledge of the terminology, coding symbols and standard abbreviations used in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and related electrical systems
- Knowledge of the methods and techniques followed in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating, air conditioning, steam and related electrical systems
- Knowledge of the methods and techniques of pipes threading and soldering
- Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment and materials used in heating, refrigeration, ventilating, air conditioning, steam and related electrical systems
- Skill in the use of electrical testing equipment
- Skill in operating heating, refrigeration, ventilating, and air conditioning machinery and related equipment
- Knowledge of electrical, electronic (DDC) and pneumatic HVAC control systems
- Knowledge of the use electrical test equipment such as voltmeters amp probe, etc.
- Knowledge of the laws, regulations and codes governing the safe and environmentally correct operation and repair of building systems
- Ability to understand and apply the policies, procedures, specifications, and standards and guidelines governing HVAC activities
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as specifications, operation manuals and blueprints
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Mechanics aptitude and dexterity
- Knowledge of basic computer skills including the ability to order supplies and equipment as needed to complete work and assist others in the completion of their work
Operational Needs:
- Demonstrated willingness to be on essential personnel list for facility related emergencies and University Closings due to weather and other emergencies
- Possess a current and valid driver's license
- EPA Reclaim License
Preferred Qualifications:
- 7 years full-time, or equivalent part- time technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning systems, as an HVAC Technician holding a valid Refrigeration Technician licensee
- Current MA Pipefitters license
- Ability to operate air and hydraulic lifts
- Similar institution experience
- Knowledge of a variety of low voltage systems such as HVAC controls
- Ability to operate Energy Management Systems
