JOB SUMMARY: The Financial Counselor interviews uninsured and underinsured patients to determine eligibility for Medicaid or other state/county sources of funding. The Financial Counselor assists patients through the application process and follows each case to resolution. The Financial Counselor is authorized to act as the patient’s representative and works closely with state/county agencies to ensure the information required to determine eligibility is provided in a timely manner. The Financial Counselor must be knowledgeable and current with Federal/state guidelines and regulations governing all sponsorship agencies. Assist patients with Financial Assistance applications when denied by Medicaid or their combined hospital patient account balances are greater than $1,000.00.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Interview uninsured and underinsured patients to determine eligibility for Medicaid or other state/county sources of funding.
- Assist patients through application process and follows to resolution.
- Assists patient with Financial Assistance applications when denied by Medicaid or their combined hospital patient account balances are greater than $1,000.
- Represents patients at local and state appeal hearings whose Medicaid or Social Security disability application have been denied.
- Prepares bank deposit daily, balancing cash and cash drawers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of two years post graduate courses in accounting or business administration preferred.
Experience: Prior appropriate work experience of at least two years as Medicaid case worker, customer service, insurance billing and reimbursement preferred.
Other: Requires high level of communication skills and organizational ability. Microsoft and Excel proficiency required. Familiarity with statutes and regulations that impact collection of past due accounts desirable.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Range of motion within functional limits. Occasional bending, reaching, standing, walking. Frequent sitting. Vision and hearing within functional limits. Manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination. Occasionally lifts and carries items of 25#.
