Summary of Job Duties:

The Prototyping Project & Facility Manager/Machinist is responsible for prototype fabrication to support product development for early-stage start-ups in NWA. This includes bringing a product from idea/concept through design, functional prototyping, development, testing, and design verification. The Prototyping Project & Facility Manager / Machinist will also be responsible for our Bentonville prototyping facility, the maintenance of the machines, and supervision of interns and graduate students in a service-learning environment. You will have the opportunity to have significant impact, grow your skills, and have fun in this exciting role!

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Utilizing 3D printing, CNC, and manual equipment including mills and lathes for fabricating models, prototypes, test parts, and low volume production of products.
  • Participating and providing input in design meetings and ‘brainstorming’ sessions
  • Ensuring that all machines and measurement equipment are calibrated regularly as needed
  • Performing routine maintenance and servicing machines to ensure smooth, trouble-free operation
  • Maintaining clean work environment by regular cleaning and upkeep
  • Representing the University of Arkansas in a professional manner and uphold the highest standards of ethical business practices and socially responsible conduct in all interactions with industry partners, students, and the NWA start-up ecosystem we serve.

Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least six years of experience in Machining/Tool & Die making
  • Ability to proficiently use CNC and manual mills and lathes
  • Advanced level CAD/CAM experience required
  • Proven creative skills in design and ability to improve existing designs
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to train, assist, and mentor other team members, including interns and graduate students

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 years of experience in Machining/Tool & Die making
  • Experience in outdoor recreation, medical device, or smart mobility product development preferred
  • Metal 3D printing experience preferred
  • Work experience at a university prototyping or fabrication lab/facility preferred

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Skilled as a strong self-starter who can work with little or no supervision
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and effectively within a fast-paced environment
  • Well organized, has detail-oriented skills and a team player capable of meeting deadlines
