The UCSF Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences (https://bts.ucsf.edu) invites applications for a faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. We welcome applications from creative scientists asking fundamental questions and creating innovative technologies to join our interdisciplinary department of investigators.

The department is interested in recruiting new faculty who work at interfaces between scientific disciplines represented within our department (including computational biology, molecular engineering and design, therapeutic bioengineering, systems pharmacology, drug development sciences, pharmacogenomics) and across the entire discovery science community at UCSF (e.g. biochemistry, biophysics, cell biology, pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, physiology, neuroscience, human genetics). We are particularly interested in candidates who are at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence/machine learning into biology. Applications will be considered from scientists with experimental and/or computational approaches.

Tenure-track faculty candidates are expected to hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D., Pharm.D./Ph.D or M.D./Ph.D.) and to have completed postdoctoral research training in a relevant field. The successful candidate will have demonstrated significant research accomplishments and present a clearly articulated original research program with the potential to impact discovery science with long-term applications to human health.

They must also be committed to the mentorship of students and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion across the campus. They will establish an exciting and collaborative research program and join our top-ranked interdisciplinary graduate programs (see https://graduate.ucsf.edu/list-programs).

1. Biosketch/Curriculum Vitae - note that while we will accept any format, we prefer a modified NIH-style biosketch with the following sections:
   • A - Personal statement. This section should describe why you are well-suited for our department. Relevant factors may include: aspects of your training; your previous experimental or theoretical work; the collaborators you envision working with at UCSF; how you would benefit from and contribute to the scientific environment at UCSF; your vision for your future research program. This should be no longer than 300 words. Note that unlike a standard NIH biosketch there is no need to include ongoing and completed research projects from the past three years that you want to draw attention to (as this overlaps with section B). There is also no need to cite up to four publications or research products that highlight your experience and qualifications (as this overlaps with section C).
   • B. Positions, Scientific Appointments and Honors. List in reverse chronological order all current positions and scientific appointments. This section should also include all awards, scholarships, traineeships, fellowships, and development awards.
   • C. Contributions to Science. Briefly describe up to five of your most significant contributions to science. The description of each contribution should be no longer than 300 words. For each contribution, indicate the following: * the historical background that frames the scientific problem; * the central finding(s); * the influence of the finding(s) on the progress of science or the application of those finding(s) to health or technology; and; * your specific role in the described work. * Figures, tables, or graphics are not allowed. For each contribution, you may cite up to four publications or research products that are relevant to the contribution. You may cite published papers or publicly available preprints deposited on a server (e.g. BioRxiv). We will not accept confidential manuscripts as attachments to the application.
   • D. Link to published work. Include a single link to your published work (including preprints), NIH My Bibliography, Google Scholar, or ORCID are all acceptable.
2. A description of future research plans; Ideally, this is 2 pages, including figures - but not including references.
3. A one-page teaching statement, including formal and informal mentoring activities; and

Note that we are not asking for a cover letter (that material is largely redundant with section A of the biosketch) or a document of past research (that material is largely redundant with section C of the biosketch) as part of the application material.

The selected candidate must meet all qualifications at the time of application. Candidate's application materials must state required qualifications (or if pending) upon submission.

Review will begin on October 28, 2023 and continue until the position is filled. The Interviews will occur in two phases. First a short list of candidates will be invited to speak to the committee via video conference in December. In the second phase, a limited set of candidates will be invited for in-person visits early in 2024.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $103,800-$135,400. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
