Summary

The Director guides the execution of Michigan Medicine's strategy for corporate foundations, professional foundations, private foundations, associations and other organizations, and corporate entities. In this role, the Director creates, leads, and executes cross-divisional strategies to promote regional and nationwide corporate and foundation support of Michigan Medicine, including UM Hospitals and Medical School. This position provides strategic counsel to the Chief Development Officer, other institutional leadership, and volunteer leaders to advance philanthropic support of Michigan Medicine.

The Director leads a team who foster a culture where faculty and CFR staff are encouraged and supported to apply for corporate and foundation funding, and where resources are provided to allow for the submission of applications which are tailored to the funder's procedures and application processes. The Director builds and oversees relationships between Foundation and Corporate program officers by arranging personal visits and conversations and strategizing interactions with Michigan Medicine faculty.

The Director encourages and facilitates collaboration with the greater Office of University Development's Team, the Offices of Research and Sponsored Projects, the UM Medical School Office of Research, the Office of University Development CFR team, Fast Forward Medical Innovation team and departmental grants administrators, faculty and staff.

Additionally, the Director oversees a team focused on the development of a comprehensive corporate engagement strategy, primarily focused on corporate sponsorship activity to support UMHS fund-raising events. The corporate engagement team also work to deepen Michigan Medicine's connectivity to the corporate arena in Michigan and beyond through engagement with corporate leaders, staff, and other constituents.

In addition, the Director oversees the comprehensive health equity fundraising efforts for Michigan Medicine.

Responsibilities*

  • Develop profitable internal relationships to create cross-institutional opportunities that advance the organization's image with key development publics, stakeholders, and constituencies.
  • Manage a portfolio of foundations and corporations, becoming expert in that group's mission and funding preferences, developing UM's strategy for each.
  • Increase proposals submitted to managed foundations and corporations.
  • Oversee the circulation of requests for proposals, offering support of proposal development in doing so.
  • Coach and mentor Michigan Medicine Development team members, supporting an environment of professional growth and mastery of development best practices.
  • Present to faculty and staff groups on strategies for approaching foundations and corporations for funding.
  • Consider broad development strategies to departments and faculty leaders served.
  • Work with Michigan Medicine Development Communications team to articulate projects and proposals as their support is needed.
  • Edit and write proposals as needed or find writers and designers if required and feasible.
  • Manage CFR staff within the UMHS Development Office to accomplish UMHS fundraising tasks.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree plus education and experience
  • At least seven years of experience in non-profit development, preferably in an academic setting
  • Experience working with health system faculty and leadership
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated problem solving and leadership ability
  • Ability to work collaboratively and use influence skills

Work Locations

The onsite location for this position is an office suite at 777 E. Eisenhower Pkwy, Ann Arbor. This building provides free, on-site parking for staff.

This position may be eligible for flexible work opportunities at the discretion of the hiring department. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on the business needs of the hiring department, throughout the course of employment. This position works both onsite and remotely based on the business needs of the unit.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
