Summary

The Center for Respiratory Virus Research and Response (MCRVRR) is seeking several dependable and highly organized temporary Research Assistants to support recruitment for one of several NIH/CDC-funded respiratory virus research studies. The Research Assistant will work under the direction of the Center Manager and study project managers, to recruit eligible participants and administer study data collection tools.

The temporary Research Assistants will be placed at an outpatient clinic in the SE Michigan area, or Michigan Medicine Hospital and are responsible for working with clinic personnel to identify and recruit potential eligible study subjects, obtain informed consent, administer study interviews and complete data collection forms, and self-collect a nasal swab specimen, properly store and package samples for transport to the research laboratory, maintain an inventory of research study supplies, and request study materials as needed. This temporary position is during the influenza season and spans September - April. Responsibilities*

  • Identify, engage, and approach potential participants in the clinic or hospital, explaining the respiratory virus research study's purpose and details while serving as an ambassador and representative for the Center for Respiratory Virus Research of the School of Public Health.
  • Screen and assess patients for eligibility based on predefined study criteria, accurately documenting their demographic and medical information.
  • Obtain informed consent from eligible participants, ensuring they have a clear understanding of the study procedures, potential risks, and benefits involved.
  • Collect and record data accurately and timely, maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of participant information.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals in the hospital or clinic to ensure care integrity.
  • Maintain strict adherence to study protocols, ethical guidelines, and regulatory requirements throughout the recruitment process.
  • Schedule and coordinate participant calls, ensuring efficient communication and organization.
  • Monitor clinic supply inventory.
  • Provide support and guidance to participants, addressing any concerns or inquiries they may have during the study.
  • Collaborate with the research team to ensure accurate data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Maintain effective communication and collaboration with team members, reporting on participant recruitment progress regularly.
  • Stay updated on relevant research literature and advancements in respiratory viruses to enhance knowledge and contribute to the study's success.
  • Assist with research related tasks as needed.


Required Qualifications*

  • Prior experience assisting with patient health care visits and/or clinical research study experience, including informed consent process, interviewing research study subjects, and accurately completing data collection forms.
  • Ability to adhere to safety guidelines and procedures, promoting a safe and healthy environment for participants and staff and maintain patient/participant confidentiality.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills are necessary in order to work effectively with staff at participating health centers.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills including, data entry, Google Suite products, email and Microsoft products.
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrating strong ability to prioritize tasks, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Reliable transportation to the University of Michigan School of Public Health and assigned health center is required.
