Job Description
The Mowing Crew Supervisor will oversee campus mowing, mulching, and general grounds maintenance to ensure a safe, healthy, and visually appealing landscape. Provide direct leadership and supervision to grounds staff, ensuring timely and effective execution of all grounds care operations. Adjust maintenance practices in response to weather conditions and campus events, balancing the protection of green spaces with the needs of pedestrian traffic, equipment access, and temporary structures.
Key Responsibilities
Grounds Maintenance Leadership
- Direct and supervise mowing crews to uphold campus landscaping standards.
- Schedule and monitor routine mowing, edging, and line trimming, ensuring adherence to APPA Level of Care and daily quality standards.
- Adjust maintenance plans based on weather and special events to minimize disruption and preserve grounds integrity.
- Maintain a productive work environment by coordinating daily crew assignments and managing time effectively.
- Lead fall leaf removal planning and execution.
- Oversee winter snow removal operations, including on-call responsibilities from November to March (2 p.m. – 11 p.m. shifts), with the expectation of occasional overtime and holiday coverage to ensure campus safety.
Equipment Maintenance and Compliance
- Lead weekly equipment checks, including blade sharpening, lubrication, tire pressure inspections, and general mower upkeep.
- Create and manage maintenance work orders in AIM to ensure compliance with IOSHA VPP safety requirements.
Professional Development and Industry Awareness
- Maintain active involvement in professional organizations such as the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) and the Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA).
- Stay informed on current trends, technologies, and best practices through industry events, webinars, and conferences.
Team Supervision and Field Support
- Provide leadership and hands-on support to mowing teams using Toro batwing, 60”, and 24” mowers.
- Ensure safety and efficiency by inspecting grounds for debris before mowing to prevent equipment damage.
- Rotate mowing patterns to promote healthy turf and minimize wear.
- Train staff to identify and report property damage related to mowing (e.g., to electrical boxes, signage, bollards, irrigation, etc.).
- Supervise seasonal workers assisting with growth regulator applications, edging, trimming, and mulching.
- Oversee mulch operations, including material selection, purchasing, and installation.
- Establish annual performance goals for team members and coach them toward achieving stretch goals.
- Communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats to support team development.
- Serve as a liaison between grounds crews and campus partners to ensure alignment and responsiveness.
- Develop and distribute weekly and monthly schedules for mowing, edging, and trimming.
- Lead monthly safety briefings during departmental meetings.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education Qualifications: High school diploma or GED
- Experience: 5 to 6 years
- Skill Qualifications: Golf course or extensive commercial grounds mowing experience with a specialized focus on edging, mulching, mowing, and equipment maintenance practices.
