The UWM Libraries—Golda Meir Library on the Milwaukee campus and two branches, UWM at Waukesha Library and UWM at Washington County Library—advance the campus mission by providing access to holdings of more than 5.4 million physical items, 200,000 e-books, and 142,000 digital serials.

The UWM Libraries maintain memberships and affiliations in the Council of University of Wisconsin Libraries, the Digital Public Library of America, the Midwest Art Conservation Center, Recollection Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Area Research Center Network, and the World Digital Library. The Libraries use Ex Libris’ Alma for its integrated library system, OCLC’s CONTENTdm for its digital collections, and bepress’ Digital Commons to share the intellectual output of UWM’s faculty and research community.

The American Geographical Society Library (AGSL) is one of the premier collections of its kind in North America. Founded in the 1850s, the collection contains maps, atlases, books, periodicals, photos, and geographical data supporting inquiry into a variety of disciplines. Collections date from the 15th century and are worldwide in coverage.

Job Summary
The Health Sciences Librarian supports the university goals to be excellent in inter-disciplinary research and graduate highly educated individuals at all degree levels. Working under the leadership of the Research Services Lead, position responsibilities include providing effective delivery of instruction and consultations to students, staff and faculty; implementing instruction and co-curricular engagement programs aimed at the College of Health Professions & Sciences and the Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health; engage in academic outreach to College of Health Professions & Sciences and the Joseph J. Zilber College of Public Health and assigned departments; and contribute to programming to educate graduate students and faculty on established and emerging practices in scholarly communication. This position is expected to provide excellent customer service in a professional manner and serve as a model representative of UWM and the Libraries.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Serves as a liaison to nursing, health sciences, and related disciplines and/or other campus units providing information on collections, instructional and research support, and library services
  • Provides reference and research consultation services; answers questions that are complex and highly specialized in nature
  • Designs, develops, delivers, and assesses instruction in a variety of formats to faculty, staff, students, and other patrons
  • Provides specialized services utilizing a high level of expertise on a broad range of disciplines or in a designated discipline area, e.g. systematic reviews, literature synthesis
  • Develops or coordinates specialized projects or programs, e.g. evidence based practice tutorial
  • Cultivates and maintains productive relationships with health science information colleagues
  • Serves as a resource to other librarians and staff outside of their unit on a regular basis, e.g. BSN@Home, BSN at UWM at Waukesha.
  • Initiates and solicits input to modify policies, procedures, and assessment tools to improve workflows and/or user experiences
  • Serves on committees to advance librarianship at the campus, local, and/or state and national levels
  • Assist in the oversight of interns and field work students
  • Develops, curates, and manages health science resources


Flexible schedule with some evenings required
Salary minimum $48,870 depending on experience and qualifications
The University of Wisconsin System offers a comprehensive benefits package to employees. The University contributes to the cost of several benefit plans. Leave packages: 176 hours vacation, 176 hours Sick leave (during the first 18 months) (96 hours thereafter) 36 hours personal holiday. This leave is granted on a fiscal year basis, July 1-June 30. Depending on start date and percentage of appointment, leave may be pro-rated.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master of Library Science/Master of Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Experience with literature searching in health-related fields through coursework or employment
  • Experience with systematic reviews through coursework or employment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Evidence of competency in evidence-based practice and research for nursing and health sciences
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and coordinate work among different projects
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Degree, course work, or equivalent experience in health-related field
