JOB TITLE:
Laboratory Technician III
JOB PURPOSE:
This position is in support of diagnostic and research activities within the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory and the Department of Veterinary Sciences. Specifically, this position will support molecular diagnostics including nucleic acid sequencing, associated bioinformatics, and support in the UWBF (
UW Biocontainment Facility)
.

. Employees in essential positions may be required to work during emergency closures and winter closure based on the nature of their job duties and the reasons for the closure.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage nucleic acid sequencing operations for WSVL, VESC and UWBF. Perform nucleic acid sequencing for research and diagnostics. Analyze and interpret results using current bioinformatic tools, following all laboratory QC and safety requirements.
Perform molecular diagnostic testing. Perform tests, analyze and interpret results, following all laboratory QC and safety requirements.
General diagnostic and research support within the UWBF
Develop and maintain quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and validity of results.
In a timely manner; maintain records, complete laboratory forms and report services performed.
Maintain inventory and purchase laboratory supplies.
Operate and maintain highly complex research instruments/equipment.
Communicate results of diagnostic/research testing with internal and external clients.
Participate in laboratory safety and QC training.
Instruct faculty, staff and students in the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment; assist and instruct users in the interpretation of results.
Assist in teaching designated laboratory related course work, such as PATH 4050, PATH 4200, PATH 5505, lab management or special problems.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
Provide support as needed in the UW Biocontainment Facility
Participate in method development and research project design(s).

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:
This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field (molecular biology, biochemistry, veterinary or health science, biology, anatomy/ physiology or related field)
Experience: 2 years work-related experience in molecular assays, nucleic acid sequencing and basic bioinformatic analysis.
Basic knowledge and ability to utilize Linux based computing.
Excellent written, oral, and verbal communication skills.
Enrollment in UW's occupational health program
The incumbent will be required to qualify for Tier 1 Select Agent status with the CDC.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Master's degree in a related field (molecular biology, biochemistry, veterinary or health science, biology, anatomy/physiology or related field)
