Job Summary
The Radiation Safety Program provides radiation safety services to UT Southwestern Medical Center, University Hospitals, Parkland Health and its associated clinics, and Children's Health and its associated clinics. The Radiation Safety Specialist will assist in the development and maintenance of a comprehensive radiation safety program, including developing and providing radiation safety trainings, performing audits to ensure regulatory compliance, and maintaining records as required per regulatory standards. The Radiation Safety Specialist position is part of our Registration Program (radiation-producing machines). Our Registration Program oversees the compliance for over 400 radiation machines (including MR units) and monitors the occupational exposure for over 2,500 participants. The Registration Program covers our advanced radiation oncology accelerators (one PET LINAC and two MR LINACs), PET MR for nuclear medicine research, and our 7T MRI and other research MR units at the Advanced Imaging Research Center. The Registration Program supports six mammography facilities throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
Experience and Education
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in safety related field strongly preferred and two (2) years directly related safety experience.
Master's degree in safety related field and no experience.
Professional certification pertinent to specific safety specialty is preferred and may be considered in lieu of degree with four (4) years of directly related safety experience.
Pertinent Military experience may be considered for some of the required experience.

Ensures employee health & safety standards are met in all areas of the organization.
Performs surveys of laboratories and facilities to ensure adherence to safety regulation and procedures.
Identifies potential safety hazards, prepares reports on conditions, and takes action to mitigate identified deficiencies.
Ensures proper use and disposal of hazardous materials and waste.
Provide assistance and safety training to departments.
This position is designated as essential. Personnel in designated essential positions are expected to report to work as required in the event of an emergency to sustain institutional services or protect assets.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Work requires exercise of considerable judgment in application and interpretation of procedures, safety regulations, standards and codes.
Work requires contact with staff and faculty of other departments while conducting inspections or providing technical assistance.
