What are the responsibilities and job description for the Comptroller and Assistant Treasurer position at Utica University?
The Comptroller and Assistant Treasurer is responsible for directing all of the University’s accounting functions — including establishing and maintaining the University’s accounting principles, practices and procedures in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Prepares financial reports and presents findings and recommendations to senior staff. Oversees general accounting, purchasing, budgeting, accounts payable, payroll and the student accounts function of the Center for Student Success.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Directs and coordinates the University’s financial planning and budget management functions.
- Oversees full budget process. Directly responsible for operating expenditures and salary and benefit budgets.
- Responsible for coordination of year end audit activities.
- Monitors and analyzes monthly operating results against budget. Prepares reports as needed for the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees reflecting the University’s financial status.
- Responsible for coordinating debt financing and debt payments to external agencies.
- Prepares annual reports of actual revenues, expenses, and transfers.
- Responsible for all fixed assets, including depreciation calculations.
- Responsible for establishing and monitoring financial controls and accounting procedures.
- Oversees Restricted, Endowment and Life Income accounts. Monitors, maintains records, and reports on investments for these funds. Maintains records for permanently and temporarily restricted principal funds. Calculates and distributes income to each of the funds. Reviews legal documents to determine that the University is in compliance with the criteria of each of the Fund agreements.
- Oversees the daily operations of purchasing, accounts payable, payroll, general accounting and student accounts function of the Center for Student Success.
- May perform other related duties as assigned.
- Responsible for working with supervisor and other team members to achieve successful results on all established individual and departmental goals and key performance indicators.
- Takes an active role in the development of the departments strategic and operational plans as required by department leadership. Works closely with department supervisor to develop and implement operational goals that support departmental success.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required, advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive and relevant experience in fund accounting in the higher education field is required.
- Must have knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and State and Federal laws.
- Certified Public Accountant Required.
