Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
The Laundry Worker performs work in planning and providing laundry related services within the County Detention Center. An employee in this class is responsible for the preparation and cleaning of inmates’ laundry within the County Detention Center. The employee prepares, sanitizes, and cleans the laundry area. Work involves ordering, maintaining, and storing laundry and supplies. Patience and firmness are required in frequent contacts with inmates. Work is performed under the direct supervision and is evaluated through observation, review of budgets, and quality of service.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Ensures efficiency in the laundry area.
- Monitors and inventories stock.
- Examines supplies to determine that quantities are sufficient to supply needs and requisitions.
- Participates in the cleaning of laundry in the County Detention Center; removes stains from items using the appropriate procedures; folds laundry.
- Performs related functions to include cleaning of area and stocking inventory.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses or Certifications:
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Must meet the minimum standards set by the State of North Carolina for detention facility personnel.
Must be able to work flexible hours, including shift work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Skill in organizing and prioritizing work.
- Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.
- Ability to get along with others, and work effectively with the public and co-workers.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
- Ability to operate a washer and dryer.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Tasks may require the following abilities: balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, and standing, stooping, and walking. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a relatively safe, and secure work environment. The employee is subject to hazards associated with laundry and detention center work including working inside environments, exposure to various hazards such as high temperature, noise, moving mechanical parts, electrical current and may be required to work in close quarters with inmates.
