NATURE OF WORK:

The Assistant Director of Membership plays a critical leadership role in advancing the mission of the organization by overseeing the development and execution of strategic membership initiatives. This role supports national membership growth and retention efforts, drives operational excellence, supervises staff, and represents the organization externally. The position requires strategic vision, analytical skill, strong interpersonal abilities, and the capacity to serve as the acting lead in the absence of the Director.

Through shared accountability, regular communication, and mutual support, the Assistant Director will uphold the department’s goal to cultivate a unified environment where everyone’s contributions reinforce collective success.  Each member of the Membership team will endeavor to deliver exceptional value to our members and uphold the VFW’s mission nationwide. 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the principal advisor to the Director and act as department lead in their absence.
  • Oversee and contribute to the development of national membership strategy and annual goals.
  • Manage the department budget to ensure fiscal responsibility and alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Supervise membership department staff and ensure effective cross-functional collaboration.
  • Oversee program evaluations, using results to recommend strategic improvements.
  • Analyze high-level data and metrics related to member retention, growth, and prepare actionable reports.
  • Oversee the design, content creation, and production of membership collateral including brochures, guides, training materials, and applications.
  • Implement membership special programs such as:
    • Membership Outreach Grants
    • New Post Development and Revitalization
    • Certified National Recruiter Program
    • Legacy Life/Memorial Legacy Program
  • Represent the organization at national events, conferences, and meetings.
  • Act as a liaison between the Membership Department and other internal departments.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support membership goals and departmental priorities.

Qualifications


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

The position requires 5 or more years of related experience working in a membership supported organization, and extensive knowledge of the VFW purpose, its programs and membership initiatives. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience required. Relevant military experience or leadership roles may be considered in place of a formal degree.

Must have knowledge of membership engagement strategies and best practices; budget management and fiscal planning; marketing and communications principles related to membership materials; and program evaluation methodologies and data interpretation. 

Proven skills in supervising and mentoring staff, strategic thinking and decision-making, excellent written and verbal communication, project and program management, and data analysis and the use of membership-related CRM systems required.

Position requires the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across departments, work independently while aligning with organizational goals, adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment, and be comfortable with public speaking.

Eligibility for, and membership in, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is required, as this position includes responsibilities to represent the organization at the VFW National Convention, as well as at regional and state meetings and workshops.

SCOPE OF POSITION:

Position is FLSA exempt. 

The Assistant Director of Membership reports directly to the Sr. Director of Membership & Member Services and will serve as a principal advisor. This position manages all aspects of the membership department, including budget oversight, personnel supervision, program evaluation, and the development of strategic initiatives. The Assistant Director also leads special membership programs and represents the organization at national events and with internal stakeholders.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Standard office environment with extended periods of computer use.  May involve working outside of normal business hours during peak program or event periods. Travel will be required for attending the National Convention, regional/state meetings, workshops, membership outreach and public events.

  • Effective leadership and operational oversight in the absence of the Director.
  • Development and implementation of successful membership strategies.
  • Department budget management and resource allocation.
  • Staff supervision and development.
  • Execution and evaluation of special programs and outreach initiatives.
  • Production of high-quality membership collateral.
  • Accurate and timely communication of eligibility and application materials.
  • Representing the organization with professionalism and integrity.
  • Positive collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to meet departmental goals
