Building Maintenance Worker I

The Village of Downers Grove seeks a qualified applicant to fill the Public Works Department's Building Maintenance Worker I position. This role performs custodial duties for Village-owned buildings. The ideal candidate will have the strong interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with employees, citizens, and businesses and quickly transition between duties while maintaining efficiency and focus.

Major Duties and Functions:

• Performs daily cleaning and maintenance of Village-owned buildings

• Maintains the quality of Village-owned buildings

• Facilitates the security measures and plans for Village-owned buildings

• Assists other departments and employees in management of evening (after-hours) meetings

• Provides some snow removal services on Village sidewalks and parking lots

• Maintains a safe workplace for all Village employees, customers, and clients of the Village

• Complies with all safety standards, including, but not limited to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and department Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

• Responds to requests for service

• Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

• Read, write, and speak English

• Ability to perform lifting, pushing and pulling, and carrying of heavy objects and/or equipment

• Ability to drive, stand, walk, bend and stoop, kneel for extended periods of time

Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED required, plus one to three years of custodial experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid Illinois Driver’s License

Salary and Benefits: Starting wages for this position is $38,653, increasing to $55,219 following six years of service. This is a bargaining unit position in the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150, Public Employees Division. The Village provides an excellent benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
