What are the responsibilities and job description for the Project Geologist position at Wood Rodgers?

Project Geologist

Wood Rodgers, a leading engineering consulting firm headquartered in California, is hiring a project geologist in our Water Resources Department in Sacramento or Roseville, CA. We are seeking a motivated individual with groundwater resource management, development, and well design experience to support our growing practice.  If you are a water resource engineer or hydro/geologist, then we know that water partially flows through your veins.

If you are dedicated and driven to uncover new and exciting solutions and opportunities, then Wood Rodgers is for you. Our work centers on developing solutions to our groundwater resource needs based on an understanding of groundwater basins to support drinking water supplies, sustainable agricultural practices, and groundwater recharge. Our projects focus on implementing a wide array of water supply projects and range from site-specific projects to basin-wide scientific assessments.

We bring new ways of solving old problems. We are inventors, we ask, ‘why not?’ and we challenge convention.

 What You Will Be Doing

  • Oversee, manage, and provide technical expertise on the development of groundwater resources for a wide variety of clients in the municipal, commercial, and agricultural sectors.
  • Oversee, manage, and provide technical assistance on the development of groundwater recharge projects for many clients.
  • Prepare, plan, organize, and oversee all aspects of a project to achieve specific goals within defined constraints, such as time, budget, and resources.
  • Engage in business development strategies to increase your department’s revenue, expand its market share, and solidify its position as a leading provider of geology and groundwater-related services.
  • Perform geologic and hydrogeologic studies, including managing field activities, to maximize the efficiency of data collection, reduce risks, and ensure that the fieldwork meets its objectives.
  • Perform well field assessments, including preparing capital improvement plans and asset management plans.
  • Design and construct municipal supply wells which require careful planning, engineering expertise, and adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Provide field support to observe contractor related activities, including borehole drilling, well construction, well development, and well testing.
  • Have familiarity with methods and tools and perform collection of groundwater samples from production wells and monitoring wells.
  • Travel to/from project sites in company vehicle and work in potentially adverse weather conditions (i.e., rain, cold, heat).
  • Occasional overnight trips may be necessary, depending on the location of the project. Travel is anticipated to be within California and will be compensated for.
  • Evaluate and provide condition assessments for various geological features, projects, and environmental sites.
  • Analyze changes in pumping water levels, sand production, and electrical consumption to evaluate the health of a well and pumping equipment.
  • The ability to develop and apply analytical and numerical groundwater models to support contaminant investigations and water resource projects is desired, but not required.
  • Prepare well rehabilitation and modification programs to restore well capacity and/or improve water quality.
  • Oversee the preparation of geologic and hydrogeologic cross-sections to support groundwater resource protection/development.
  • Building and maintaining positive client relationships to generate additional revenue.

The Ante

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Geology, Hydrogeology, or Earth Science (master’s degree a plus).
  • Licensed in California as a Professional Geologist (PG), or Professional Engineer (PE).
  • 5 years’ experience in hydrogeologic consulting with a successful record of accomplishment with data analysis, report preparation, generation of exhibits and figures to relay geologic and hydrogeologic data, and client satisfaction.
  • Experience and knowledge of municipal water well design, drilling methods, construction, and testing.

What it takes

  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Highly motivated self-starter.
  • The ability to travel and work in an outdoor environment on as-needed field support for drilling/construction projects.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is encouraged, as it is rewarding.
