The Pathology Assistant ("PA") implements the hospital's mission, goals and objectives by exemplifying the short-and-long-term vision, values and goals of the department by providing professional laboratory science services in the department's surgical pathology and autopsy sections, including performance of duties described below.
- Intelligence-Ability to understand instructions, reason and make judgements.

- Numerical-Ability to perform arithmetic operations, quickly and accurately.
- Spatial-Ability to understand forms in space and understand relationships of plane and solid objects.
- Form Perception-Ability to perceive pertinent details and objects in pictorial or graphic material.
- In the division of Surgical Pathology, the PA will receive tissue specimens submitted from the operating room, nursing floors and specialty rooms. Such specimens will be checked for appropriate submission, properly numbered and logged.
- The PA will accurately describe the specimens received and descriptions thereafter to be typed into CoPath or completed by secretarial staff.
- The PA will obtain the proper representative tissue specimen for subsequent preparation of appropriate slides; such specimens will be appropriately labeled and indicated in our daily tissue accession log. Prepared slides will thereafter be reviewed and record.
- The PA may be permitted to review such slides either at that time or thereafter.
- To assist in the performance of autopsies.
- The PA may be permitted to review such slides either at that time or thereafter.
- The PA will help in preparing a written Gross Examination Report, to be checked and approved by the Pathologist prior to completion.
- The PA will be required to be on-call evenings and weekends, either in the Hospital or at home, to receive telephone calls relating to autopsy consent or other problems within the laboratory service.
- The PA will not be responsible for signing any surgical, cytology or autopsy reports and will not assume any patient sensitive assignments.
- Performs all other duties as required.
Position Requirements:
- This position requires a minimum formal education of Associate Degree or certification equivalent and a minimum of 3 years job-related experience.
- Desired (not required) criteria include: Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 3 years of experience as a Pathology Assistant in a Pathology Laboratory.
- NYS Permit for a Pathology Assistant.
